Does AMSOIL Make Conventional Motor Oil?
A reader asks: Does AMSOIL make conventional motor oil?
Our answer: AMSOIL does not make conventional, regular or “dino” engine oil (well, except for one product).
The only AMSOIL motor oil product that is not synthetic or semi-synthetic is the AMSOIL Break-in Oil (SAE 30). This product is designed for re-built street-rod and racing engines. Break-in oil is only in service for a brief time and to serve a specific purpose. Therefore, for this particular application, conventional oil gets the job done.
AMSOIL was the first company to offer a synthetic motor oil for automotive applications back in 1972. They built their reputation on synthetic oil and have manufactured almost all full-synthetic oil products for the 50-plus year existence of the company. Synthetic oils were the only base oil types that could withstand the long service life built into many of the products. Also, only synthetic oil could deliver the lofty performance and protective properties guaranteed by AMSOIL.
Does AMSOIL Make Semi-Synthetic Oil Products?
AMSOIL has made a few synthetic-blend oils over the years. They now touch on semi-synthetics where it serves a function or meets a price-point.
For a few years, the only blend was AMSOIL Marine Synthetic-Blend 25W-40. This product was designed as a synthetic-blend because Mercury Marine recommended this base oil type for many of their engines.
Most recently, AMSOIL has released their Commercial-Grade series of diesel engine oil and hydraulic oils. The Commercial-Grade series is formulated to meet a competitive-price point. Therefore, semi-synthetic base oils are employed across the line-up. However, ultra-high quality is still a major consideration. These products contain at least 50% synthetic oil. Most synthetic-blends on the market contain between 1% and 15% synthetic oil.
Will AMSOIL Make Conventional Engine Oils In The Future?
In our opinion, that seems doubtful. The motor oil industry targets for wear protection, fuel economy and deposit control are always increasing. Synthetic oils are best equipped to meet these performance targets. We submit that conventional oil demand will be consistently falling in the coming years. Therefore, it seems unlikely that AMSOIL would move toward an increasingly outdated technology.
