Can 15W-60 Motorcycle Oil Replace SAE 60?

AMSOIL V-Twin Synthetic 15W-60 Motorcycle OilAMSOIL is no longer offering their SAE 60 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil in Canada. The reason for this decision was low sales. Most motorcycles exclusively requiring an SAE 60 motorcycle oil are well over 40 years old. AMSOIL V-Twin SAE 60 will still be offered in the US.

The Harley-Davidson Knucklehead, Panhead and Shovelhead engines use SAE 60 engine oil. Here are the model years that Harley-Davidson offered these engines.

  • Knucklehead- 1936-47
  • Panhead- 1948-65
  • Shovelhead- 1966-84

While AMSOIL is no longer offering the V-Twin SAE 60 motorcycle oil, AMSOIL does offer a very viable option.

A Replacement For SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil

A good replacement for straight-weight SAE 60 motorcycle oil is AMSOIL 15W-60 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil. Is a multi-grade oil is suitable for a classic motorcycle engines and transmissions? Absolutely.

Why were straight-grade engine oils used back in the day? The reason is that straight-grade oils were the only reliable way to prevent shearing or thinning-out back then. Multi-grade oils were in their infancy and had to employ primitive “viscosity-index improver” ingredients that were very prone to shear-down. This was especially true in the face of high heat or use in transmissions.

Engine oil technology has advance greatly in past couple of generations.

AMSOIL V-Twin Synthetic 15W-60 is incredibly shear-stable and immune to thinning-out. The 100% synthetic formula delivers a very wide operating temperature range and iron-clad shear stability.

How Does 15W-60 Differ From SAE 60 Motorcycle Oil?

Here are the kinematic viscosity numbers measured in centistokes at 100°C and 40°C for the AMSOIL V-Twin SAE 60 and 15W-60 motorcycle oils.

SAE 60
100°C- 23.4 cSt
40°C- 190.2 cSt

15W-60
100°C- 23.1 cSt
40°C- 164 cSt

As you can see, the viscosity of these two oils are identical at 100°C. Therefore, at operating temperatures, you are getting equal 60-weight viscosity from both products. The kinematic viscosity of the 15W-60 is lower at 40°C. This means that the 15W-60 will deliver better flow at start-up.

Let’s dig a little deeper and look at high-temperature/high-shear viscosity testing numbers measured at 150°C. This testing protocol shows how well a motor oil maintains its viscosity under extreme conditions. The AMSOIL V-Twin SAE 60 result was 7.08 centipoise (cP), while the V-Twin 15W-60 scored a similar 6.9 cP. In other words, both products had virtually the same ability to resist shearing and thinning-out in high temperatures.

Conclusion

AMSOIL V-Twin 15W-60 offers the exact same viscosity protection as the V-Twin SAE 60 product. The only significant difference is that 15W-60 offers a bit faster oil flow at start-up. We would call this an advantage. All without the risk of being beaten down into a thinner oil under hot operating conditions.

2025 Arctic Cat Snowmobile Highlights

The big news for Arctic Cat in 2025 is the introduction of a new big bore two-stroke engine and an exciting new big-screen dash display.

New 858 2-Stroke Engine

The new 858cc engine replaces the 800 C-TEC2. This new 858 motor is said to be over 10% more powerful than the previous 800 engine and yet is about 3% lighter than the 600cc C-TEC2 motor. This should put the 858 in the 175-180 horsepower range and also giving it a remarkable power-to-weight ratio. This will be Cat’s flagship powerplant for trail, mountain and crossover machines.

Garmin G8 Display

This new 8-inch, touchscreen display is found on some M Series Mountain Cats, Riot 2-stroke and ZR 2-stroke models. It features Garmin GPS mapping that does not require a connected phone. This platform allows you to connect to up to 20 riders. It can show their location, offers the ability to exchange messages and allows you to speak with connected riders through Bluetooth headsets. Non-G8 owners and even non-Arctic Cat riders can participate in this group platform by simply downloading an app. This display also offers detailed machine instrumentation, phone connectivity and live weather radar and notifications. Can One ATF Be Used In Many Vehicle Brands?

AMSOIL Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic ATFA reader asks: I’ve got two GM vehicles. One vehicle suggests DEXRON VI  transmission fluid and the other calls for DEXRON HP. It looks like AMSOIL Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic ATF covers both of those GM specs and can be used in both transmissions. I see that this product covers a lot of specifications from many car makers. How can one ATF be a good fit for all of those different transmission types?

Our answer: One automatic transmission fluid can certainly can meet a multitude of industry specifications. However, this requires high-end ingredients and careful design. The first order of business is to find the transmission fluid specification requirement listed in your owner’s manual.

The ATF specifications from car makers offer a number of clearly defined formulation parameters to consider. If an ATF’s numbers fall into the parameter limits laid out by the specification, then the product can carry the spec on the label.

The industry specifications offer targets that include viscosity, frictional properties, shear stability and oxidation stability (to name a few).
Consider that the viscosity and frictional requirements of many modern ATF specifications are very close. Therefore, it is quite doable for one ATF to cover those categories.

As this AMSOIL ATF is an elite synthetic formula, it easily exceeds the shear stability and oxidation stability requirements for most all specs.

To sum up, if AMSOIL matches the viscosity and frictional requirements for an ATF, then its powerful formula is going to make easy work of the performance requirements such as shear and oxidative stability. Therefore, it becomes much clearer as to how a single ATF can meet the specifications required by several car makers.

What’s New With 2024 Arctic Cat Snowmobiles?

Arctic Cat’s biggest change for 2024 is the introduction of their new “Catalyst” chassis. This new platform is Arctic Cat’s first major chassis revision in over 10 years. The Catalyst platform is lighter, narrower and more centralized in terms of riding position. Emphasis is also placed on lowering the center of gravity. The result is nimble handling and a more balanced riding position. For 2024, the Catalyst chassis will only be available with the C-TEC 600cc engine in M mountain, Riot crossover and ZR trail models. This platform will be available with larger engine options in the 2025 model year.

Another revolutionary change is a new belt-drive system that replaces the typical chaincase. An oil-bathed chain and sprocket system has been used as a power transfer mechanism since the invention of the snowmobile. This new belt-drive system has been incorporated into the 600cc C-TEC engine. Advantages of this new belt-drive system include more efficient power transfer and the elimination of chaincase oil changes.

Ski-Doo Brings Turbo To The Trail

Ski-Doo has added a serious dose of excitement to the MXZ series for 2024. They now offer the option of the 180 horsepower 850 E-TEC Turbo R engine in the MXZ X-RS model. This engine was first introduced in the Freeride mountain sleds. Instead of adding the extra weight of an intercooler, Ski-Doo took a more novel approach. A mixture of water and methanol is injected into the intake to cool the air as it enters the cylinders. This allows for more air volume to enter the cylinders, thereby maximizing power output.

Other 2024 Ski-Doo Line-up Changes

Here are the other changes of note for ‘24. The REV Gen5 chassis has been added to several 4-stroke and 600cc two-stroke models. The Backcountry series gets the cMotionX rear suspension. The Renegade line is shifting almost entirely to four-stroke engines. The Freeride models get a series of chassis refinements for improved handling.
