Why Is There A 75W-85 Gear Oil Grade?

Car makers have been striving for years to find every marginal gain in terms of fuel efficiency. Part of this agenda has been moving to thinner and thinner lubricants. This has been the case with engine oils, transmission fluids and gear lubes. The trend has been most apparent in engine oils. In the past 20 years, we’ve witnessed the move from 5W-30 to 5W-20/0W-20 to 0W-16 and now even 0W-8 in some cars!

Of course, the biggest challenge of moving to thinner lubricants is to ensure that wear protection is not compromised. The vast majority of cars, trucks and SUV’s have traditionally used 75W-90 in their differentials. The move from 75W-90 to 75W-85 in some applications is not a large viscosity drop. Wear protection will not be affected. So why is the auto industry bothering to essentially invent a slightly thinner gear oil grade? Simply put, marginal gains are marginal gains.

What Is Unique About The New AMSOIL Synthetic-Blend Motor Oils?

These new semi-synthetic motor oils contain over 50% synthetic base oils. The reason that this is remarkable is that almost all of the synthetic-blends on the market contain between 5% and 15% actual synthetic oil. While one may assume that a semi-synthetic oil is always 50% synthetic oil, that is certainly not the case.

The benefit of this generous dose of synthetic base oil is improved extreme-climate performance, lower friction and better deposit control.

This new line is API SP (Resource Conserving) and ILSAC GF-6A licensed. Each viscosity also covers GM dexos 1 (Gen 3), along with Ford and Chrysler specs.

It is projected that other automakers such as Honda, Nissan, Mazda and Mitsubishi will be suggesting the 0W-8 viscosity for some hybrid engines in the next model year or so.

AMSOIL High-Foam Car Shampoo

This car wash product can be used with a bucket or with a snow foam cannon. We tried it with a snow foam cannon attachment for our pressure washer and highly recommend this option. There are also foam cannons that can be attached to a plain, old garden hose. So one does not necessarily need to own a pressure washer. We were very impressed with the lather that this Car Shampoo generates.

First we washed off loose dirt with plain water at high pressure. Then we doused the vehicle with a generous amount of foam and then let it sit for a few minutes. We then gently scrubbed the entire vehicle with a micro-fiber wash mitt (rinsing it often). Lastly, we rinsed the vehicle with the pressure washer. The results were very impressive.

The prescribed dose is 2 ounces of High-Foam Shampoo per use. With our snow foam cannon, this is easily enough water/shampoo mix for one vehicle (and then some). In fact, there was enough foam mix in our cannon reservoir for two medium-sized cars.

AMSOIL Exterior Ceramic Spray

The new AMSOIL Ceramic Spray is for exterior surfaces like body paint, plastic and glass. It protects from UV damage, repels water and leaves a brilliant shine. The protective properties can stay in place for up to one year.

We tried this product for the first time and came away with two observations. First, it is ridiculously easy to use. Simply spray on the surface, distribute with a micro-fiber cloth. Then lightly buff with a dry micro-fiber cloth. Unlike waxes and polishes, there is virtually no elbow grease required.

The second observation was the resulting shine. With little effort, our paint was left with a deep luster. We will definitely be reaching for this product in the future.

AMSOIL Interior Detailer

AMSOIL rounds up this car care line with an Interior Detailer Spray. There are two versions of this product. It is available in unscented or a light-lemon scented version.

This is a multi-functional product that accomplishes three tasks in one fell swoop. It cleans dashboards, interior trim, display screens, gauge clusters and more. This product also protects against the ravages of UV damage for up to 90 days. Lastly, it leaves a beautiful, non-glossy appearance.

So what’s the difference?

The most obvious difference is the suggested service life of each product. This new ultra-premium Signature Series 0W-16 has a maximum service life of 25,000 miles (40,000 km) or one year.

Hybrid 0W-16 has a maximum service life of 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or one year.

The value-priced OE 0W-16 has a suggested service life of the longest interval suggested by the vehicle’s owner’s manual or oil life monitor.

While the Hybrid 0W-16 is marketed specifically for hybrid cars, both the Signature Series and OE Series 0W-16 products can also perform admirably in hybrid engines.
