Reader Needs Replacement For Mobil Epic EP 102 Grease

A reader asks: We are looking for a good replacement for Mobil Epic EP 102 Grease for slow moving bearings, bushings and chassis service in a variety of equipment. Do you have a grease that will pump well in winter and help our equipment last longer?

Answer: If you need a grease that pumps well in winter and can also be used in summer, we’ve got a couple of options for farm, industry and oil patch use.

The Mobil Epic EP 102 grease is a semi-synthetic NLGI # 1.5 grade. The “NLGI” (National Lubricating Grease Institute) grade is an industry standard that refers to the consistency or hardness of the grease. Traditionally, NLGI # 1 grease has used in winter and NLGI # 2 has been used in summer. With today’s advancements in lubricant technology, many NLGI # 1 greases can be used year-round. We would recommend replacing this Mobil grease with a good “full-synthetic” NLGI # 1 grease.

Is there a difference between 100% synthetic, semi-synthetic and conventional NLGI # 1 grease? Won’t all types of NLGI # 1 grease pump easily in cold weather? No they will not. The NLGI hardness testing takes place at 25°C (77°F). Full synthetic lubricants maintain a consistent viscosity over a much wider temperature range than semi-synthetic and conventional greases or oils. Semi-syn grease and regular grease can be solid in very cold winter temperatures, while good synthetic grease will still pump reasonably well.

A Full-Synthetic Substitute for Mobil Epic EP 102 Grease

Our first choice would be AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Truck, Chassis and Equipment Grease (the NLGI # 1 version). This grease will pump easily in winter, but it will also offer a number of other functional benefits. This multi-talented grease stays put in the face of heavy torque forces and shock loads and this is beneficial in two ways. First, this means that equipment needs to be serviced less often. Secondly, less grease will be needed at each service. As nobody enjoys greasing in winter weather, this is a major asset.

Other benefits of the synthetic AMSOIL grease are a strong resistance to water incursion, snow, ice and mud as well the ability to lower friction for reduced energy requirements. Overall, AMSOIL Synthetic Polymeric Truck, Chassis and Equipment Grease will pay for itself in many ways.

Update- AMSOIL Synthetic Arctic Grease has been discontinued and is no longer available for sale. 

If your servicing takes place in really extreme cold, we have an alternate choice for you. AMSOIL Arctic Synthetic Grease is also an NLGI #1 grease that can pump down to -40°C (-40°F). If grease flow in bitter cold is your number one concern, then this product should be on your radar. It has a working range of -59°C (-75°F) to 157°C (315°F). In other words, when temperatures are in the -30 to -40 range, this grease will not cause moving parts to drag or bind and there will be less energy draw. Protection will not be compromised in warm weather, so there is no problem with this grease staying in service over the summer. Arctic Grease also has great staying power and protection against shock loads and heavy applications.
