New AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush Q&A
AMSOIL Inc. has published a Q&A discussing the details of the new AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush.
1. Question:
What are the differences between AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush (product code FLSH) and the previous AMSOIL Engine Flush (product code AEF)?
Answer:
AMSOIL researched the latest flushing technologies and developed a powerful detergent‐based formulation that offers a superior alternative to the previous solvent‐based technology. Powerful dispersants and detergents dissolve and disperse sludge, varnish and deposits formed in engines and transmissions. The upgraded technology allows for increased applications, including gasoline and diesel engines and automatic transmissions. The detergent‐based chemistry is environmentally safe and can be disposed of the same way as other used lubricants.
2. Question:
What are the benefits of performing an engine flush with AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush?
Answer:
Engines run most efficiently when new, but over time gather harmful deposits that cause power and performance loss. Stop and go driving, prolonged idling, water condensation and oxidized oil can promote sludge buildup. As it settles, sludge clogs narrow passages, restricting oil flow to vital parts, especially in the engine’s upper valve train area. Flushing an engine prior to an oil change helps loosen and remove deposits, increasing oil circulation to areas that need it most. The removal of sludge and deposits help unclog oil ports, loosen sticky valves, reduce lifter noise, help lower operating temperatures and increase efficiency.
3. Question:
What are some of the benefits of performing a transmission flush with AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush?
Answer:
As transmissions age, they collect deposits on clutch plates and gears, causing a loss of shifting efficiency. AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush is formulated with detergent and dispersant additives for a controlled removal of deposits throughout the transmission, oil cooler and ports to help improve shifting performance.
4. Question:
When should engines and transmissions be flushed?
Answer:
AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush is designed to be used at the time of an engine oil or transmission fluid change. Although not required, the detergent‐based solution is safe enough to be used with every fluid change.
5. Question:
How should this product be used with a flushing machine at a quick lube shop?
Answer:
When using this product with a flushing machine, follow the machine manufacturer’s recommendation for use.
6. Question:
What are the directions for using this product in an engine or transmission without a flushing machine?
Answer:
Engine – Add the entire bottle to the engine oil fill port. Idle the engine for 10‐15 minutes, then immediately drain the oil. Replace the engine oil filter and refill with new engine oil. Transmission – Engage the emergency brake. Add the entire bottle to the transmission oil fill port. Idle 10‐15 minutes; shift through drive and reverse. Do NOT place vehicle under heavy load. Drain the entire transmission and torque converter of fluid. The FILTER MUST BE CHANGED prior to refilling with new transmission fluid.
Note: If the torque converter is not equipped with a drain plug, the transmission cooler line must be disconnected and flushed appropriately.
7. Question:
Should transmissions be flushed at home or taken to a shop?
Answer:
Without proper equipment, transmissions can be difficult to flush completely. When using AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush, it is required that the entire transmission and torque converter are drained before installing new transmission fluid and filter. If using a flushing machine, be sure to also drop the pan and install a new transmission filter. Therefore, unless proper equipment is available, the vehicle should be taken to a certified shop for the flushing procedure.
8. Question:
Will there be any problems if all of the flush product is not removed from the engine or transmission?
Answer:
If a small amount is left in the engine or transmission there should be no issue. However AMSOIL strongly recommends proper flushing procedures to ensure the entire flush is removed so dissolved varnishes and deposits do not remain in the engine or transmission.
9. Question:
If the transmission oil sump size is larger than the engine oil sump, why is the treat rate of 16 ounces the same for both?
Answer:
AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush was tested in a range of applications and the concentrated detergent formulation was found to be an effective one‐treatment cleanup in small and large sump sizes found in either engines or transmissions.
10. Question:
Does AMSOIL require an engine or transmission flush prior to switching to AMSOIL synthetic lubricants?
Answer:
AMSOIL does not require a flush be performed prior to switching to AMSOIL synthetic lubricants; however, a flush is an excellent way to prepare an engine or transmission for new oil. AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush helps remove deposits and buildup that may have accumulated while running conventional lubricants.
11. Question:
If a transmission has been shifting poorly and a gear has been lost, will the flush help the transmission operate better?
Answer:
AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush will not fix mechanical problems in transmissions or engines, and is not recommended for use in transmissions or engines with pre‐existing mechanical issues. Along with routine fluid changes at original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specified intervals, this product aids in the removal of deposits inside the transmission and engine to promote better operability.
12. Question:
The flushing procedure with the previous AMSOIL Engine Flush (AEF) required two engine oil filter changes, one before and one after the flush. Now with the new flush, only one engine oil filter change is recommended. Why?
Answer:
AMSOIL determined that a second engine oil filter change is not required. A single filter change simplifies the flushing procedure, however if a customer would like to perform a second filter change, this would not be discouraged.
13. Question:
Why does the transmission filter have to be changed after performing a transmission flush?
Answer:
To maintain the efficiency and longevity of a transmission, it is required to change the filter when performing a transmission fluid change or flush. Contaminants can build up in a transmission filter, causing oil starvation, leading to sluggish shifting and poor performance. AMSOIL requires that the transmission filter is changed prior to refilling the transmission with new transmission fluid.
14. Question:
My transmission does not have a filter, it has a screen, does this need to be replaced or cleaned?
Answer:
Generally, transmission screens do not need to be replaced unless damaged or torn. Transmission screens can be cleaned; consult a certified shop for their recommendation.
15. Question:
Can FLSH be used in manual transmissions?
Answer:
AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush is not recommended for manual transmissions, transaxles, differentials or CVT transmissions.
16. Question:
Are there any vehicles that should not be flushed?
Answer:
Yes. AMSOIL requires that the transmission filter is changed when performing a flush. If the transmission filter is not accessible and cannot be changed, AMSOIL does not recommend this product.
17. Question:
How does this product provide sustainable benefits to the environment?
Answer:
AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush cleans engines and transmissions, allowing them to run more efficiently, promoting lower emissions. The upgraded technology does not contain solvents and can be disposed of in the same manner as used engine oil or transmission fluid.
18. Question:
Since this product is recommended for use in both engines and transmissions, can it be used to flush out common sumps in motorcycles or ATVs ?
Answer:
Not at this time. However, there is a possibility that these applications may be added in the future.
19. Question:
Is it possible that AMSOIL Engine and Transmission Flush can remove large deposits in the engine and then cause ports and clearances to be blocked?
