We recently had a customer ask us about which oil to use when breaking-in new or rebuilt Briggs & Stratton kart racing engines. Our view was always that these engines could be broken-in using Briggs & Stratton/AMSOIL 4T Synthetic Racing Oil. The customer also contacted Briggs & Stratton to get their official break-in procedure. Below is their response.
Step-By-Step Break-in Procedure For The Briggs 206 Engine
Here are the official break-in steps from Briggs & Stratton.
The 206 engine ships without oil. There may be a small amount of oil residue in the crankcase. This would be from power testing of the engine. Only use Briggs & Stratton 4T Racing Oil by Amsoil. We engineered this oil specifically for our racing engines. Using automotive or other karting oils can have very negative consequences. There isn’t another oil that will offer better power output or protection.
Note that many of the break-in opinions on the internet are based on outdated information and incorrect beliefs. Here are our break-in recommendations:
Add 14 ounces of Briggs & Stratton/AMSOIL 4T Synthetic Racing Oil
Drive kart for for 10 minutes at varying RPM.
Let cool and do it again.
Let cool and do it again.
At this point, drain the oil while warm. This will keep any break-in particles suspended in the oil and easier to evacuate.
After an hour of operation, check the valve lash (as per Brigg’s specifications). Heat cycles help parts relieve any stresses held in during manufacturing. In our valve train, this usually opens lash slightly.
Briggs & Stratton is extremely pleased with the track record of 4T Synthetic Racing Oil. It offers the best combination of heat resistance, anti-foaming, friction reduction and reliability.

A reader asks: “Despite the fact that AMSOIL Synthetic engine oils are designed for very long oil change intervals, my personal preference is to change my oil at the mileage suggested by my owners’ manual. As I’m changing my oil more often than most AMSOIL users would, is it worth it to use AMSOIL or…
Two-Cycle (or 2-Stroke) engines may not be as popular as they once were, but they are still used in a multitude of applications. While air quality regulators have slowly pushed them out of many segments of the marketplace, the 2-stroke’s simple design and outstanding power-to-weight ratio still makes them relevant in many applications. Two-Cycle (or…
Oil filters from both Mobil 1 and AMSOIL are highly regarded for their quality construction and filtering ability. These are premium oil filters with a price tag that tends to be on the higher-side of the market. Let’s compare the features and service life of both filter brands and (most importantly) their ability to remove…
Updated- April, 2024 A reader asks: I have a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 with the G56 six-speed manual transmission. My truck is fairly stock. I’m looking to replace the ATF fluid in the transmission with gear oil. Mercedes builds these transmissions and recommends MobilTrans SHC DC SAE 50 transmission oil in Europe. This product is…
If you own a Ski-Doo snowmobile equipped with the latest E-TEC engine, you may be under the impression that only BRP XPS-2 Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil is capable of protecting your engine. You wouldn’t be alone as Ski-Doo and their dealer network work very hard to promote this sentiment. AMSOIL has often contested OEM claims that…
A question from a reader: “I have a stock KTM 250 EXC 2-stroke dirt bike and I ride tight trails where the engine is lugged. I also run the bike hard in sand and on open trails. I’m confused as to whether I should use AMSOIL Dominator or Interceptor two-stroke oil. How hard can you…
