How To Flush A Motorcycle’s Wet-Clutch After Using Car Motor Oil

A reader asks: I recently changed oil in my motorcycle and mistakenly used car engine oil. I knew there was something wrong when the clutch started slipping early into rides. Is there a flush that can be used to get all of the automotive oil residue out of the clutch? Can this clutch be salvaged?

Our answer: As the reader has learned, it is a massive no-no to use oil designed for automotive engines in motorcycle or ATV engines/transmissions that have a wet-clutch. The friction modifiers in car engine oil cause the clutch plates to slip and eventually glaze. Once the clutch plates are severely glazed, the clutch will slip regularly and will have to be replaced.

Do not use chemical engine flush products in an attempt to remove the friction modifier from the clutch plates. This can do more harm than good to your clutch.

A better option is to change to a motorcycle-specific oil (which will not contain friction modifiers). Run at low loads for an hour or two and then change the oil again. Run this batch for another hour. Then put the engine under moderate load to determine if the clutch slips. If it does not slip, the clutch may be fine. If the clutch does slip, then you will have to change the clutch plates.

We’ve heard of a few cases where clutches have been salvaged after short intervals of wrongly using automotive engine oil. Assuming that the clutch plates are not badly glazed, the method of flushing with a motorcycle oil may be worth a try. However, there are no guarantees that the clutch can be saved.

Why Is Car Engine Oil Bad For Motorcycle Clutches?

Friction modifiers are included in automotive engine oil formulas to reduce friction and improve fuel economy. However, these friction modifier ingredients cause motorcycle wet-clutch plates to slip and ultimately fail.

Both conventional and synthetic car motor oils are equally bad for motorcycle transmission use.

Do Synthetic Motorcycle Oils Cause Clutch Slippage?

Neither synthetic or conventional motorcycle oils employ friction modifiers. Therefore, they are safe for wet-clutches. Despite synthetic motorcycle oils having the attribute of reducing friction, they do have the correct frictional properties for wet-clutches. In fact, synthetic motorcycle oil is arguably better for clutches as it can reduce operating temperatures.

AMSOIL Metric Vs Dirt Bike Motorcycle Oils

A reader asks: My Suzuki V-Strom 650 asks for 10W-40 oil. My motorcycle is used for street, touring and light adventure riding. Some V-Strom owners run the AMSOIL Dirt Bike 10W-40 in this model, while others run the Metric 10W-40. What is the difference between the two and what is the best choice for my motorcycle?

Our answer: Both the AMSOIL Metric Synthetic 10W-40 and AMSOIL Dirt Bike Synthetic 10W-40 offer world-class protection, performance and smooth shifting. However, there are some very important distinctions between the two. Let’s take a look.

Service Life

The Metric 10W-40 has a longer service life than the Dirt Bike 10W-40. The Metric 10W-40 product was designed to stay in service for up to two times the OEM-suggested drain interval or one year (whichever comes first). AMSOIL “overbuilt” this product so that it could withstand big touring miles.

The Dirt Bike 10W-40 is designed to go the full service interval as suggested by the motorcycle manufacturer. Unlike the Metric Oil, it is not designed for extended drain intervals. The reason being is that the oil is changed more frequently in motocross and dirt bike applications. However, the Dirt Bike Oil can certainly stay in service for the entire service interval as suggested by your owner’s manual. This does not imply that the Dirt Bike product is “underbuilt”. It designed to withstand the severe thrashing delved out by dirt bike engines and transmissions.

Clutch Operation

Discerning riders may notice subtle clutch engagement differences between these two products. AMSOIL Dirt Bike 10W-40 is designed to deliver slightly more aggressive clutch engagement. The reason being is that motocross bikes require instant clutch engagement during race starts and in tight off-road situations. The Metric Oil is designed to deliver smoother clutch engagement which would be more desirable on the street.

It is important to note that both of these synthetic motorcycle oils are 100% wet-clutch compatible. As they both promote cooler operation, longer clutch plate life can be expected. There is no risk of clutch slippage when switching from a conventional motorcycle oil to one of these AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils.

It should also be noted that AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils have a reputation for optimizing shifting smoothness. They can also ease shifting into neutral.

Engine Protection

Both products have been torture-tested in professional racing and on the test bench. The AMSOIL Metric and Dirt Bike 10W-40 oils offer world-class engine and transmission protection. There is no wrong answer between them in this category.

Corrosion Protection

Both the Metric and Dirt Bike Oils contain rust and corrosion inhibiters. However, as the Metric 10W-40 product is designed for longer service intervals, it is a bit more robust on this front.

The total base number of each oil gives us a hint regarding corrosion fighting ability. Total base number (or TBN) is a motor oil’s capacity to withstand acidity. The higher the total base number, the greater the capacity to battle acids. The Metric 10W-40 has a very high TBN of 11.6. Dirt Bike 10W-40 has a respectable TBN of 7.6.

While TBN doesn’t tell the entire story regarding corrosion resistance, it does give us a good indication. Again, as the Metric 10W-40 is designed for ultra-long service intervals, a high TBN is a great asset.

Meanwhile, the Dirt Bike Oil is designed to provide wear control in the dirt bikes and motocross bikes that are routinely pushed to the very limit. However, the drain intervals are generally not that long. Therefore, having an ultra-high TBN is redundant and not a requirement in dirt bike applications.

Conclusion

Both the AMSOIL Dirt Bike and Metric oils will work exceptionally well. However, based on the street/touring/adventure usage, Metric 10W-40 gets the edge. The longer service life is a better fit for bigger miles. The smoother clutch actuation may also be a plus in stop and go traffic.

Motorcycle Oil: Do Zinc And Phosphorus Levels Matter Anymore?

A reader asks: I’ve got a Ducati Monster 1200. AMSOIL Metric 15W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil is suggested for this model. This engine revs up to over 9000 rpm, so it needs oil with good wear protection and foaming resistance. What is the zinc and phosphorus content of this oil? I can’t find this information anywhere.

Our answer: The fixation on zinc and phosphorus content in motorcycle oil is old thinking. With today’s ashless additive technology, zinc and phosphorus levels are far less relevant for some motor oils. Let us explain.

AMSOIL Metric 15W-50 carries the JASO MA2 and API SM specifications. The JASO MA2 oil standard signifies that a motorcycle oil is safe for catalytic converters. High levels of traditional motor oil additives like zinc and phosphorus can damage catalytic converters. Therefore, alternate technology has to be employed in order for the oil to provide adequate wear protection.

Metric 15W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil employs the latest “ashless” additive technology. Therefore, it has less zinc and phosphorus than some of AMSOIL’s more traditional motorcycle oil formulas.

Why Zinc And Phosphorus Numbers Are Not Important Anymore

Let’s compare the zinc and phosphorus content of AMSOIL V-Twin Synthetic 20W-50 and AMSOIL Metric Synthetic 15W-50. The V-Twin 20W-50 has a more traditional formulation than Metric 15W-50.

AMSOIL Metric 15W-50- Zinc- 841 ppm, Phosphorus- 767 ppm
AMSOIL V-Twin 20W-50- Zinc- 1300 ppm, Phosphorus- 1100 ppm

Based on these numbers, is the V-Twin 20W-50 vastly superior to Metric 15W-50? Not at all! AMSOIL Technical Services tells us that the wear control between the two products is identical. They also tell us that ashless additives bring other advantages.

For instance, when there is blow-by, old-style heavy-metal additives (such as zinc and phosphorus) from can create engine deposits. Ashless additives do not create these deposits.

Conclusion

Ashless motor oil additive technology has revolutionized motor oils in the passenger car and heavy-duty diesel engine oil segments. This technology is also a major player in part of the motorcycle oil market. Simply looking for the motorcycle oil with the highest zinc and phosphorus numbers won’t automatically point to the best product.

Is Diesel Engine Oil OK For Motorcycles Engines and Transmissions?

A reader asks: A lot of motorcycle owners use Shell Rotella T6 diesel oil in their engines/transmissions. Is there any downside to using diesel motor oil in motorcycles? As Shell Rotella can be found fairly cheap, why would I want to use the more expensive AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils?

Our Answer: Diesel motor oils can provide (somewhat) adequate service in motorcycle engines and transmissions. But diesel oil used as a motorcycle oil won’t necessarily provide good value. Even if it has a lower price tag.

Dedicated motorcycle oils have a precise additive package combination. This balance of ingredients delivers specific protective and performance characteristics. This chemistry will not be found in diesel motor oil as it is designed for its specific application.

The reason that diesel engine oils can be used in motorcycle engines is that they do not contain friction modifiers. The friction modifiers found in passenger car motor oils (for gasoline-powered car/truck engines) will quickly glaze wet-clutch plates.

Here are some of the features of AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil that are not a consideration in the design of diesel engine oils.

Motorcycle Oil Vs. Diesel Engine Oil In Transmissions

The biggest knock on diesel engine oils in this case is that they are not formulated for motorcycle transmission use. When used in common sumps (for both engine and transmission), diesel oil can be prone to sheering down and losing viscosity. Some diesel engines have timing gears, but this is nothing like the concentrated thrashing of a motorcycle transmission. The meshing of gears in motorcycle transmissions can rapidly sheer down oils that are not equipped for that type of use. Therefore, this rapid thinning will also hurt the diesel oil’s ability to protect the engine in common sumps.

AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils are loaded with ingredients that withstand heavy transmission use. AMSOIL is also famous for lowering transmission friction for buttery smooth shifting. This factor alone is well worth the step up to AMSOIL.

Wet-Clutch Performance And Longevity

Diesel oils may not cause clutch plate glazing, but they are not formulated with wet-clutch performance and preservation in mind. AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oils are formulated to fight clutch fade and provide consistent clutch “feel”. They deliver steady clutch performance under high-heat and extreme loads. Dedicated motorcycle oils will maintain the correct frictional properties over long service intervals.

Motorcycle Engine Oil Withstands High RPM And Heat

High revving motorcycle engines can red-line anywhere from 5500 rpm to well north of 10,000 rpm. They can also generate extreme heat. This is especially true for air-cooled engines. When designing their synthetic motorcycle oils, AMSOIL borrowed anti-rust and corrosion technology from their Marine Engine Oil line. Engine internals are protected from moisture ingestion and long periods of off-season storage. Diesel engine oils would not contain this level of anti-corrosion ingredients. Therefore, they may not be as effective at protecting internal engine parts from rust.

Service Interval: Some Motorcycle Oils Are Extended Drain Capable

AMSOIL designs their V-Twin and Metric Motorcycle Oils for long service intervals. They can stay in service for up to double the interval as suggested by the engine manufacturer. AMSOIL formulates these oils to withstand the heat, transmission gear thrashing and high-RPM. They also have the capacity to hold clutch particles, transmission particles and combustion deposits in suspension over this interval. Diesel engines oils are not designed to provide this length of service. As mentioned, the meshing of gears in transmissions will quickly sheer down diesel motor oil and reduce its service life.

A reader asks: Why does AMSOIL Dirt Bike 10W-40 have the JASO MA rating and not the JASO MA2 rating like the AMSOIL Metric Motorcycle 10W-40? How important is this?

Our answer: Before we get into the finer details of JASO MA versus JASO MA2, let’s talk about the real-world difference between AMSOIL Dirt Bike 10W-40 (JASO MA) and AMSOIL Metric 10W-40 (JASO MA2).
The starkest difference between these two products is the frictional properties and how this affects clutch performance. These oils are “tuned” and designed for optimum performance. Metric 10W-40 is designed for the street and Dirt Bike 10W-40 is formulated for severe off-road duty.

The Metric 10W-40 will provide smoother clutch operation, whereas the Dirt Bike Oil will be a little “grabbier”. The Dirt Bike Oil has to provide instant clutch engagement while launching out of a motocross starting gate, climbing up a very steep hill or to propel the bike through deep mud or sand. The Metric Oil is designed to provide smoother engagement in street riding situations.

That is not to say that the Metric Oil is any more prone to clutch slippage. We know of professional road racers that use Metric 10W-40 and have reported exceptional clutch longevity and superb performance. Both motorcycle oils are elite and will provide similar anti-wear protection.

What Is the Difference Between JASO MA And JASO MA2?

“JASO” stands for Japanese Automotive Standards Organization. Back in the 1990’s, JASO created motorcycle engine oil standards. One of the main motivations behind these motor oil standards was to signify which engine oils performed capably in wet-clutch operation.

Motor oils for automotive engines contain friction modifiers which can cause severe motorcycle clutch slippage. JASO created standards to offer consumers defined motor oil options for reliable wet-clutch performance.

JASO MA

The JASO MA standard was developed for 4-stroke motorcycles that use a common sump. In other words, the engine, transmission and clutch all use the same oil. To qualify for the JASO MA specification, a motorcycle oil must resist clutch slippage to JASO standards. The JASO MA spec also defines standards for engine and transmission wear.

JASO MA2

As catalytic converters became prevalent on 4-stroke street motorcycles, JASO came up with an oil standard for these applications. The JASO MA2 spec determines whether a motorcycle oil is compatible with catalytic converters. It also has the wet-clutch slippage resistance standard, as well as engine and transmission wear limits.

To Sum Up

Dirt bikes and motocross bikes are not equipped with catalytic converters. Therefore, there is no need to formulate AMSOIL Synthetic Dirt Bike Oil to meet the JASO MA2 spec.

Can I Use AMSOIL Metric 10W-40 in Dirt Bike and ATV?

Can AMSOIL’s motorcycle and ATV oils be used in other categories?

A reader asks: I’m using AMSOIL Metric 10W-40 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil in my Honda CBR600RR. We’ve also got a dirt bike and ATV that call for 10W-40. Can I use Metric 10W-40 in these bikes as well?

Answer: Absolutely. AMSOIL Metric 10W-40 is quite capable in dirt bike or ATV engines and transmissions. Until recently, the “MCF” Metric 10W-40 formula was AMSOIL’s only 10W-40 option for dirt bikes, street bikes and ATV’s. Note that it was used quite successfully in professional racing (both road racing and motocross).

AMSOIL released the off-road-specific Dirt Bike Synthetic 10W-40 earlier this year and its main attribute is the ability to combat clutch fade and slippage under extreme loads. The Metric 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil will provide superb service in dirt bikes, but the Dirt Bike formula is a bit of an upgrade for racing or extreme off-road operating conditions.

As for ATV’s, AMSOIL also released an ATV Synthetic Oil Series earlier this year (including a 10W-40). It too is formulated for severe off-road conditions. Metric 10W-40 would certainly provide commendable performance and protection and would be an upgrade over other ATV oil brands.

All this being said, the ATV 10W-40 or Dirt Bike 10W-40 can also admirably replace Metric 10W-40 in your street bike. The common thread of all of these products is that they are suitable for wet-clutch service and have an elite synthetic composition. Suppose that you need the robust staying power of the Dirt Bike formula for a motocross bike, but you also have a street bike and ATV and want to keep only one product around for convenience. You could easily use Dirt Bike 10W-40 in the street bike and ATV and the same could be said of the ATV 10W-40.

The bottom line is that all of these products are formulated to provide great performance in their respective category, but all of these applications require an engine oil with similar performance characteristics. So one product can be used in street bikes, ATV’s and dirt bikes, provided that they all call for the same viscosity.

In some cases, the viscosity of some of our selected alternatives might not be exactly the same as the original product. However, you can be confident that we have offered an effective substitute. For example, AMSOIL Dirt Bike Synthetic 10W-40 is listed as a transmission oil replacement in many cases (sometimes even replacing 75W-90 gear oil). AMSOIL Dirt Bike 10W-40 is designed for severe service gear and clutch protection, so this is the ultimate choice for many dirt bike transmissions. Note that gear oil viscosity is measured on a different scale than engine oils. A 10W-40 engine oil is approximately the same viscosity as a 75W-90 gear lube.

Here are is a list of the suggested AMSOIL motorcycle oils.

AMSOIL V-Twin Series V-Twin 20W-40, V-Twin 20W-50, V-Twin 15W-60 and V-Twin SAE 60– The standard for American V-Twin iron. Expect cooler operation, lower wear and smooth shifting.
