What is Cetane?

The cetane value assigned to a diesel fuel is based the time interval between when fuel is first injected into the cylinder and when actual combustion takes place. The higher the cetane number, the faster combustion occurs after fuel is injected into the cylinder. A diesel fuel with higher cetane offers more effective combustion.

The minimum allowable cetane number in North American diesel is 40. Most fuel falls between 41 and 45. Cetane can vary widely between fuel suppliers and geographical regions. For example, California’s has strict emissions laws. Therefore diesel fuel in that state must have a minimum cetane value of 53. A cetane number in the 50’s is quite effective, so cetane boost additives likely are not necessary (for the most part) in that region.

As cetane numbers enter the mid-50’s, a law of diminishing returns takes effect. There are no benefits to boosting cetane much beyond that point. Where cetane boosts are most valuable is when they can boost the cetane number beyond the early to mid-40’s.

Should You Use a Cetane Boost?

It cannot be assumed that all fuel carries a healthy cetane number. Most diesel fuel falls into the early to mid-40 range throughout most of Canada and the US.
