AMSOIL Premium Diesel Synthetic 5W-40 vs. Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic 5W-40
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil is suitable for 2007 and newer diesel models requiring the API “CJ-4” specification. This synthetic diesel oil is also an outstanding choice for older diesel engines built prior to 2007.
Features and Benefits of AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil
- Lowers friction for improved fuel mileage and maximum wear control
- Withstands hot operating temperatures and heavy loads
- Outstanding cold-cranking protection with a cold-pour-point of -46C (-51F)
- Capable of staying in service for up 3 times the recommended oil change interval in pre-2007 units
- Lowers oil consumption
- Also suitable gasoline and small engine service making it ideal for many uses.
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil Is Compatible with Exhaust Treatment Devices
This API CJ-4 diesel engine oil is compatible with all late-model exhaust treatment units including diesel particulate filters.
Long Service Capable
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil’s synthetic formula and robust additive package is “overbuilt” and designed for long oil change intervals in pre-2007 diesels. Due to fuel dilution issues, models manufactured after 2007 have to follow OEM-recommended service intervals. See “Service Life” below.
Increases Miles per Gallon
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil’s low-friction synthetic formula pays for itself by delivering a documented 3% mileage increase over regular 15W-40.
Year-Round Protection
AMSOIL 5W-40 Synthetic Diesel Oil also pays for itself by eliminating the need for seasonal oil changes. This synthetic 5W-40 diesel oil protects equally well under heavy load on hot summer days as it does during morning starts on cold northern mornings.
Curbs Oil Usage
Oil burning can occur when diesel engine oil’s volatility limits are tested under hot operating conditions or heavy loads. The robust formula of Oil Depot’s AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil can withstand extreme heat and deliver exceptional volatility resistance. The result is minimal oil usage and lowered emissions due to less oil burning.
Keeps Diesel Engine Soot Under Control
Soot can be a major scourge in diesel engine crankcases. It can cause the engine oil to thicken and can also increase engine wear. AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil’s premium formula is loaded with detergents and dispersants that keep soot in suspension and your engine internals clean. A heavy-duty synthetic diesel oil additive package like this is what separates premium diesel engine oils from the economy brands.

Mixing AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Oil with Other Brands
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil is compatible with all other brands of conventional, semi-synthetic and synthetic diesel engine oils. While you can safely mix AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Oil with other brands, this will reduce the drain interval and performance capabilities of AMSOIL diesel oil.
The use of any aftermarket diesel oil additives is definitely not recommended.
Service Life of AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Oil
AMSOIL Premium Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in mechanically-sound pre-2007 engines that are in stock form.
Diesel Engine Oil Life Recommendations
- 2007 and newer: Dodge/Cummins 6.7L, Ford PowerStroke 6.4L, GM Duramax 6.6L pickup engines must follow the manufacturer’s oil change interval. This is due to potential fuel dilution issues.
- Pre-2007 units: Up to three times the oil change interval as recommended by your owner’s manual. Must not exceed 50,000 miles (80,000 km) or 600 hours or one year.
- 2007- 2009 Caterpillar C13 and C15 highway engines must follow the manufacturer’s oil change interval. This is due to excessive fuel dilution.
Note: When using 5% biodiesel (B5), follow the manufacturer’s diesel engine oil change interval or support with oil analysis.
Gasoline Engine Oil Life Recommendations
Up to two times the oil change interval as recommended by your owner’s manual to maximum of 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or one year, whichever comes first. This oil also meets the latest specifications for gasoline engine service.
Note: When using gasoline with an ethanol content of greater than 10%, follow the manufacturer’s oil change interval or support with oil analysis.
