Can You Mix 2-Stroke Injector Oil Brands Or Types?

Tech Discussion

A reader asks: I’m currently running Polaris Blue 2-Stroke Oil in my snowmobile. Looking at switching to AMSOIL Synthetic Injector Oil. As Polaris Blue is a mineral oil and the AMSOIL is a synthetic oil, do I have to completely empty the oil tank? Would there be any problems with mixing these oils?

Our answer: All types of two-stroke injector oils can be mixed. There will not be any compatibility issues. All brands of synthetic, semi-synthetic and conventional 2-cycle oils are compatible.

Does A 2-Stroke Oil Injector Tank Need To Be Emptied When Switching Brands?

You do not have to complete empty your injector oil reservoir when switching oil types or brands. Simply run the oil level down to a safe point and pour the new oil on top.

While all two-stroke oils are compatible, they are not created equal. High-quality synthetic 2-stroke injector oils will create less exhaust smoke, offer improved performance, improved wear control and cleaner engine internals.

Therefore, when switching brands, you may note different performance characteristics when the new oil comes on-stream.

2021 Ski-Doo Snowmobile Oil Recommendations

AMSOIL Product Applications
2021 Ski-Doo Freeride 850 Turbo

In this post, we will discuss the major changes for Ski-Doo’s 2021 snowmobile lineup. We will also list every ’21 Ski-Doo model and offer our oil recommendation for each.

2021 Ski-Doo Model Highlights

New Entry-Level 600 EFI 2-Stroke Engine

A brand-new entry-level Ski-Doo engine debuts for the 2021 season. This new electric-fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, 600cc twin-cylinder 2-stroke engine can be found in the “Sport” version of many models. It is a basic, “no-frills” engine with no variable-exhaust-power-valves and delivers 85 horsepower.

This engine replaces the previous carb 600 and 550 fan-cooled engines. All Ski-Doo engines are now fuel-injected.

Turbo Option For 850 E-TEC On Mountain Sleds

Ski-Doo debuts an industry-first for 2021. They are offering the first production two-stroke turbo-charger option for their mountain sleds. A turbo-charger is available for their 850 E-TEC engine in the Freeride and Summit lines.

This turbo is not designed to provide a horsepower boost at sea-level. The main motivation of the design is to eliminate power-loss at altitude. Once the engines sensors detect power-loss at altitude, the turbo compensates. This provides a massive advantage over naturally-aspirated engines.

Suspension Upgrade For MXZ And Renegade

Some MXZ and Renegade models receive upgraded front and rear suspension this season.

The new rear suspension is called rMotion X. The new geometry of this system provides improved handling, increased travel and more adjustability.

The front system is called RAS X. This new configuration offers longer “A” arms and a longer shock over the previous RAS system. The result is more precision and control in cornering and improved bump absorption.

REV Gen4 Platform Now On All Models

For 2021, the Skandic and Tundra models now ride on the REV Gen4 platform. All Ski-Doo models are now built on this chassis.

AMSOIL Synthetic Oils For 2021 Ski-Doo Snowmobile Models

AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil
Interceptor is the ultimate Ski-Doo E-TEC injector oil. A tested and proven substitute for BRP 2T E-TEC Full-Synthetic Oil. Interceptor flows quickly in cold weather and protects from extreme heat. It keeps power-valves clean over long intervals. This oil provides the world-class performance and protection expected for E-TEC motors. Also suitable for the new 2021 E-TEC 850 Turbo engine. Interceptor meets the JASO FD specification required for Ski-Doo E-TEC motors.

AMSOIL now offers their own warranty for 2021 Ski-Doo engines using Interceptor.

AMSOIL Synthetic Injector Oil
An ideal oil for the new 600 EFI engine. Also perfect for the previous 550 fan-cooled engines. A 100%-synthetic substitute for BRP XPS 2T Carb Premium Mineral Oil. Offers low-smoke operation and clean engine internals. This Synthetic Injector Oil provides outstanding performance and protection at a great price.

AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke 0W-40 Synthetic Oil
An outstanding motor oil for Ski-Doo ACE 600 and 900 four-stroke engines (including turbos). It is an ideal replacement for Ski-Doo’s XPS 4T 0W-40 Synthetic Oil. This full-synthetic 0W-40 flows fast in arctic conditions. It also provides steady protection in extreme heat. A nice bonus is strong rust/corrosion protection of engine internals during the off-season.

Vintage Sno-Jet Kawasaki Snowmobile TV Commercial

Fun Stuff

Below is a vintage snowmobile commercial from 1977. It features the Sno-Jet Kawasaki SST 440. Kawasaki purchased the Sno-Jet snowmobile company in 1976. For the 1977 season, they branded the models as “Sno-Jet Kawasaki”. These 1977 models were very similar to the Sno-Jet machines from the previous year.

We go further in-depth into the history of Kawasaki snowmobiles here.

While the announcer is touting the performance capabilities of this snowmobile, note that this 1977 SST 440 did not use a Kawasaki engine. Yamaha motors were actually under the hoods of the SST models. Also note that the video labels this commercial from 1976. It may have aired in late 1976, but the snowmobile is from the 1977 model-year.

Can I Use Car Motor Oil In My Yamaha Snowmobile Engine?

Tech Discussion

A reader asks: I just bought a 2011 Yamaha Apex LTX snowmobile with the 998cc 4-stroke engine. The manual suggests using a 0W-30 motor oil meeting API SG (or higher) and JASO MA. All I can find locally is a NAPA Synthetic 5W-30. This is basically a car engine oil. Is it OK to use a car oil in a snowmobile engine?

Our answer: No, a car motor oil is not suitable for your Yamaha snowmobile. While an automotive oil like this may work in a pinch, it’s not the best option for regular snowmobile engine duty. It would be very wise to use a motor oil that is formulated for power sports use. Here are the reasons.

Yamaha suggests that a motor oil meet the “JASO MA” specification. This is a Japanese motorcycle oil spec that has wet-clutch performance requirements. Motor oils meeting JASO MA are different from automotive motor oils in one specific area. Automotive motor oils contain friction modifiers to improve fuel mileage and combat wear. These friction modifiers can glaze and ruin motorcycle wet-clutch plates. Therefore, motorcycle/ATV motor oils do not contain friction modifiers.

Do Friction Modifiers Matter In Snowmobile Engines? Yes!

There is a belief by some that Yamaha forbids the use of friction modifers in the motor oil for their snowmobile engines. We didn’t think so, but learned otherwise the day after this post was first published. Most Yamaha snowmobile engines do actually employ a wet-clutch in the starter system. The friction modifiers in automotive motor can cause slippage and wear on the starter clutch. So using the Mobil 1 meant for your truck is not good for your Yamaha snowmobile!

There is another good reason that JASO MA might be suggested. This being that a power sports-specific motor oil will have higher levels of zinc and phosphorus than a modern automotive motor oil. Zinc and phosphorus are important anti-wear additives. Therefore, suggesting a JASO MA oil will ensure that the consumer uses a motor oil that offers sufficiently robust anti-wear properties.

A Suitable Engine Oil For Yamaha 4-Stroke Oil Snowmobiles

Our best all-round option for 4-stroke snowmobiles is AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke Power Sports Synthetic 0W-40. Why a 0W-40? Yamaha themselves suggest synthetic 0W-40 as an option for most all their 4-stroke models.

Here are the features that make AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke 0W-40 such a strong option for Yamaha snowmobiles.

  • Anti-rust and corrosion additives not found in car motor oil
  • Flows down to -60°F for strong cold-start protection
  • Maintains film strength under extreme heat and heavy loads
  • Fights oil consumption
  • Offers elite wear protection
  • Wet-clutch-starter compatible
  • Meets API SL/CF, SJ, SH, SG and JASO MA/MA2 specifications

Why You Probably Should Not Buy AMSOIL Dominator 2-Stroke Racing Oil

Tech Discussion

AMSOIL Dominator Synthetic 2-Stroke Racing Oil AMSOIL Dominator Synthetic 2-Stroke Racing Oil could be considered the best product in its category on the planet. But we spend far more time talking customers OUT of buying Dominator for snowmobiles than selling it. Let us explain.

Dominator is designed for 2-stroke racing engines only. It is made for very hot operating temps and engines that are pushed to sky-high RPM.

A daily-use trail or mountain sled simply will not run hot enough to completely burn off Dominator’s additive package. What if your engine is modified or even turbo-charged? AMSOIL Interceptor is the more appropriate choice for all recreational use. This is the case regardless of how fast you ride.

Another major consideration is that Dominator’s detergent content is relatively low. The reason for this is that racing engines torn down frequently and run ultra-hot. So there is little need for a significant amount of detergent in the formula. When used in recreational engines, Dominator could contribute to some deposit build-up. Interceptor has a very robust detergent package. For this reason alone, Interceptor is a far better choice that Dominator in high-performance snowmobiles with variable exhaust power valves.

Does Interceptor Offer Less Wear Protection Than Dominator?

In terms of protection and performance, Interceptor is not a step down from Dominator. Dominator has a slightly thicker viscosity than Interceptor. But Interceptor also withstands extreme heat and heavy loads, while keeping power valves clean over extended periods. Interceptor is not a compromise for recreational-use. It provides the perfect balance of performance, top-notch protection and clean operation.

Getting The Correct Oil For The Job

We recently had a call from a customer that owned two Ski-Doo snowmobiles. One with the latest 800cc E-TEC engine and a 550cc fan-cooled engine in the other. He assumed that Dominator Racing Oil was AMSOIL’s best two-stroke oil. Therefore, he believed that he was doing right by his engines by using Dominator.

As a result of our conversation, he chose Interceptor for both machines. He could have used AMSOIL Synthetic Injector Oil in the 550cc fan-cooled engine. But he went with Interceptor in order to keep one oil on hand.

Here are AMSOIL’s three snowmobile 2-stroke injectors oils and a brief description of their intended use.

AMSOIL Interceptor– the premium choice for the very latest high-performance engines. Especially ideal for engines with power valves. A terrific upgrade over OEM synthetic injector oils. Interceptor is one of AMSOIL’s most acclaimed products

AMSOIL Synthetic Injector Oil– A value-priced synthetic 2-stroke oil. Ideal for utility machines, fan-cooled models or older high-performance engines. Suitable for use with power valves.

AMSOIL Dominator 2-Stroke Racing Oil– For racing engines only. Provides industry-leading protection and performance under extreme loads.

Cheapest And Easiest Snowmobile Upgrades

Tech Discussion

Polaris Rush 800 Pro X3 What is the cheapest and easiest way to upgrade your snowmobile? That’s simple and it’s no contest: synthetic oil. Some say synthetic oil is too expensive? No. It is literally the cheapest upgrade you can make to your snowmobile. The benefits far out-weigh the modest cost increase over mineral snowmobile oil.

Why synthetic oil? Your engine will run better at all temperatures and last longer. We don’t understand why conventional oils would even be a consideration in any snowmobile of any model year.

How Synthetic Oil Helps Two-Stroke Snowmobile Engines

If you have been running conventional oil in your 2-stroke engine, you will see a difference immediately after the switch to synthetic. You will notice less exhaust smoke and smoother performance. The engine will be easier to start in cold weather. If the engine is equipped with variable exhaust power valves, they will stay clean over longer periods. Simply put, a two-stroke engine will function better in every imaginable scenario with synthetic oil. This applies to old or the very latest engines.

Recommended products:
Late-model or high-performance snowmobiles- AMSOIL Interceptor
Trail, utility or recreational snowmobiles- AMSOIL Synthetic Injector Oil

Synthetic Oil In Four-Stroke Engines

As with 2-stroke engines, there is absolutely no good reason to use conventional oil in a 4-cycle snowmobile motor. The first benefit that comes to mind is improved oil flow during cold-starts. Synthetic oil flows better than conventional oil in cold weather. Therefore, this prevents wear during cold-starts. On the flip-side, synthetic oil will also provide vastly better protection in extreme heat. This is the case with everything from utility machines to fire-breathing mountain sleds.

Synthetic Chain-case Oil

The chain-case is an often-forgotten component. The thrashing that the oil receives in a snowmobile chain-case is hardly trivial. Chain-case oil has to contend with foaming, shearing, moisture, corrosion, high temperatures and low temperatures. A good synthetic chain-case oil withstands all of these issues and even lowers friction for improved performance and wear reduction. Changing out the chain-case oil after every season is a wise choice.

Recommended product: AMSOIL Synthetic Chain-Case and Gear Oil

Synthetic Chassis Grease For Snowmobiles

For snowmobiles with grease-able chassis points, a good synthetic grease can reduce wear. Synthetic grease lowers friction under cold temperatures and will also pump out of the grease gun with greater ease. Also, it is vital to choose a grease that resists the effects of snow, ice, water and salt.

Recommended product: AMSOIL Synthetic Water Resistant Grease

Bonus Tip- Preventing Snowmobile Fuel Issues

One of the largest sources of mechanical problems is related to fuel. Ethanol, moisture, dirty fuel, stale gasoline and varnish are common trouble makers. Any one of these issues can cause starting problems or an expensive break-down on the trail. AMSOIL Quickshot Gasoline Additive literally neutralizes all of these issues. It promotes trouble-free performance all season long. This cost-effective product is ideal for 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines.

AMSOIL Interceptor Now Carries JASO FD Spec For Ski-Doo E-TEC

News, Tech Discussion

AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Injector OilAMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil now meets and exceeds the requirements for the JASO FD industry specification. Why does this matter? Ski-Doo recently started recommending the use of JASO FD-compliant 2-stroke oils for their E-TEC snowmobile engines.

AMSOIL Interceptor has been extensively tested for use in Ski-Doo E-TEC engines. The addition of this spec further cements Interceptor’s credentials as the ideal 2-stroke oil for E-TEC engines. We have received nothing but rave reviews about Interceptor from our E-TEC customers. Best of all, the 100% synthetic Interceptor is priced lower than Ski-Doo/BRP 2T E-TEC Synthetic Oil or BRP Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil.

What Is The “JASO FD” 2-Stroke Oil Specification?

JASO FD is a two-stroke oil industry specification set by the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization.

As with previous JASO two-stroke oil specs, JASO FD has a number of performance and smoke guidelines. This newest “FD” specification places a much greater emphasis on detergency and engine cleanliness.

How Is AMSOIL Interceptor Suitable For Ski-Doo E-TEC Engines?

The direct injection Ski-Doo E-TEC engine sets new standards in terms of fuel efficiency, low emissions and horsepower per cubic centimeter.

One of the main features of E-TEC engines is that they consume very little 2-stroke oil. A relatively small amount of oil is the difference between peak performance or an expensive engine failure. For this reason, E-TEC engines require a very advanced synthetic 2-stroke oil. AMSOIL Interceptor offers highly sophisticated synthetic anti-wear chemistry. Extensive testing in Ski-Doo E-TEC engines has proven that Interceptor provides outstanding wear control.

Another important oil requirement for E-TEC’s is cleanliness. The precise E-TEC engines require very clean internals. This is the main reason why BRP is requiring the use of 2-stroke oils that meet the JASO FD spec. Interceptor has world-class cleaning ingredients that keep E-TEC engines operating at their peak. It also keeps RAVE variable exhaust power valves clean which optimizes performance. AMSOIL Interceptor’s clean-burning performance exceeds the JASO FD requirements.

One of the special features of the E-TEC engine is a (mostly) one-pull start in extreme cold. AMSOIL Interceptor pours down to -56°C (-69°F) for instant cold-start oil flow.

Interceptor ticks all of the boxes for E-TEC use. It provides elite wear protection, high film strength, minimal friction, robust detergent ingredients and low-smoke.

In conclusion, Interceptor offers all of these features at a lower price than BRP 2T E-TEC Synthetic Oil.
