Ski-Doo’s product line sees modest changes for 2020. However, one of the big highlights is the revamping of Expedition line of touring/utility sleds. These models now ride on Ski-Doo’s top-shelf REV Gen4 chassis. Another interesting addition is the optional “Expert” package for the Summit X mountain sled. JASO FD is a two-stroke oil industry specification set by the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization.

As with previous JASO two-stroke oil specs, JASO FD has a number of performance and smoke guidelines. This newest “FD” specification places a much greater emphasis on detergency and engine cleanliness.

How Is AMSOIL Interceptor Suitable For Ski-Doo E-TEC Engines?

The direct injection Ski-Doo E-TEC engine sets new standards in terms of fuel efficiency, low emissions and horsepower per cubic centimeter.

One of the main features of E-TEC engines is that they consume very little 2-stroke oil. A relatively small amount of oil is the difference between peak performance or an expensive engine failure. A reader asks: I’ve got a 2015 Ski-Doo Summit X 800R with a BoonDocker turbo kit. BoonDocker suggests their T2C 2-Stroke Injector Oil. I’d like to go with an AMSOIL option. Would Dominator racing oil or Interceptor be suitable for turbo use?

Our answer: We would recommend Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil, rather than the Dominator Racing 2-Stroke Oil for your turbo-charged E-TEC engine.

AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Injector OilThe main reason is cleanliness. Ski-Doo E-TEC engines are low-emissions and very high-tech. Clean engine internals and power valves are absolutely vital for proper operation. Interceptor is loaded with detergent additives. These additives prevent carbon and varnish deposits from forming. Interceptor has undergone exhaustive testing to prove its worth in Ski-Doo E-TEC engines. It is ideal for all of the latest 2-stroke motors.

Dominator 2-Stroke Oil is purely a racing oil. It is meant for engines that are frequently torn down. For that reason, it does not need to contain the level of detergents that would be preferable for E-TEC engines. Another vital factor is that snowmobile engines used for recreational riding may not run hot enough to completely burn Dominator’s additive package. This may apply even to turbo-charged engines used in hard trail and mountain riding.

Interceptor will deliver exceptional wear control in turbo-charged 2-stroke engines. It would not be considered a “step down” from Dominator for this application.

Two-Stroke Oil For Turbo Kits With A Separate Oil Tank

Some 2-stroke snowmobile turbo-chargers receive oil directly from the stock oil injection system while some kits utilize an add-on oil tank. 2016 MXZ Blizzard

The new MXZ Blizzard revives the Blizzard moniker from the late 1970s and brings a new take on high performance trail riding. The snowmobile industry is trending toward adding longer tracks to high-performance trail machines for improved flotation in deep powder. Ski-Doo commits much of the MXZ series in this direction by adding a 129-inch track. This improves traction and comfort while giving up little in the way of handling in tight trails. The MXZ Blizzard features the REV-XS chassis, the new Pilot TS adjustable skis and a choice of 600 H.O. E-TEC, 800R E-TEC, 900 ACE, or 1200 4-TEC power plants.

2016 Renegade Enduro

The Renegade family of crossover snowmobiles gets new member for 2016. The Renegade Enduro is designed to do all. Whether it be trail riding, back country exploring or touring, the Renegade Enduro looks to be up to the task. Enduro features include the a 137-inch track, the REV-XS chassis, air-ride rear suspension, Pilot TS adjustable skis and the option of 600 E-TEC, 800R E-TEC, 900 ACE, or 1200 4-TEC engines.

2016 Expedition Xtreme

The Expedition Xtreme utility and touring sled is new for 2016 and it seems to have a bit of identity crisis. It seems to be part Jeep, part drag racer. This versatile machine is outfitted with 164 horsepower 800R E-TEC engine, so we know it’s not short on ponies. Where the utility/touring part comes in is the 154-inch track, the REV-XU chassis, a synchromesh transmission for low range operation and a cargo rack.

Pilot TS Adjustable Skis

Ski-Doo introduces a brand new idea that allows riders to fine-tune their steering on the side of the trail in seconds. The Pilot TS Ski has a knob on the top of the ski that adjusts the height of the carbide runner. With a full ½ inch range of motion, the rider can quickly adjust steering characteristics of his machine when conditions change. In soft snow and powder, the rider may want more front end bite and less in hard-pack conditions. The Pilot TS Skis are featured on some MXZ, Renegade and Grand Touring models.

2016 Summit Burton Version

In our latest edition of “My First Sled”, we profile Kelly’s 1980 Ski-Doo Citation 4500. As the snowmobile industry entered the 1980s, sled designs improved by a significant degree. The tight financial times of the mid-70s were out of the way and sled makers (what few that were left) could devote R&D resources to chassis refinement. Snowmobiles took on a sleeker look and ride quality was dramatically improved.

Ski-Doo launched a completely revamped line for the 1980 model year and a big part of that roll-out was an all-new mid-range series called Citation. Positioned between the Elan and Everest models, the Citation was replacing the venerable Olympique and the previous version of the Citation. The earlier Citation was a small chassis model with a 300cc engine marketed in 1978 and 1979. The Olympique had been a fixture in the Ski-Doo line-up since 1965.

The Citation received an all new chassis with an aluminum tunnel and steel front section, along with an all rubber track.

Citation was available in three different versions:

  • 3500- Equipped with a 268cc engine with a single carb and a 106” track.
  • 4500- Featured a 368cc engine with a single carb and a 114” track.
  • SS- Also used the 368cc engine, but with twin carbs and 106” track.

The Citation models were designed as affordable sleds with great fuel economy that still provided snappy performance. Bombardier hit every mark in this undertaking. The fuel economy of the Citations was in the early to mid-20s per US gallon. We could not find 1980 pricing for the Citations, but we estimate that it was in the $1725 (US)/$2050 (Canada) range.

Qualities of the Citation Series included:
