Why You Probably Should Not Buy AMSOIL Dominator 2-Stroke Racing Oil

Tech Discussion

AMSOIL Dominator Synthetic 2-Stroke Racing Oil AMSOIL Dominator Synthetic 2-Stroke Racing Oil could be considered the best product in its category on the planet. But we spend far more time talking customers OUT of buying Dominator for snowmobiles than selling it. Let us explain.

Dominator is designed for 2-stroke racing engines only. It is made for very hot operating temps and engines that are pushed to sky-high RPM.

A daily-use trail or mountain sled simply will not run hot enough to completely burn off Dominator’s additive package. What if your engine is modified or even turbo-charged? AMSOIL Interceptor is the more appropriate choice for all recreational use. This is the case regardless of how fast you ride.

Another major consideration is that Dominator’s detergent content is relatively low. The reason for this is that racing engines torn down frequently and run ultra-hot. So there is little need for a significant amount of detergent in the formula. When used in recreational engines, Dominator could contribute to some deposit build-up. Interceptor has a very robust detergent package. For this reason alone, Interceptor is a far better choice that Dominator in high-performance snowmobiles with variable exhaust power valves.

Does Interceptor Offer Less Wear Protection Than Dominator?

In terms of protection and performance, Interceptor is not a step down from Dominator. Dominator has a slightly thicker viscosity than Interceptor. But Interceptor also withstands extreme heat and heavy loads, while keeping power valves clean over extended periods. Interceptor is not a compromise for recreational-use. It provides the perfect balance of performance, top-notch protection and clean operation.

Getting The Correct Oil For The Job

We recently had a call from a customer that owned two Ski-Doo snowmobiles. One with the latest 800cc E-TEC engine and a 550cc fan-cooled engine in the other. He assumed that Dominator Racing Oil was AMSOIL’s best two-stroke oil. Therefore, he believed that he was doing right by his engines by using Dominator.

As a result of our conversation, he chose Interceptor for both machines. He could have used AMSOIL Synthetic Injector Oil in the 550cc fan-cooled engine. But he went with Interceptor in order to keep one oil on hand.

Here are AMSOIL’s three snowmobile 2-stroke injectors oils and a brief description of their intended use.

AMSOIL Interceptor– the premium choice for the very latest high-performance engines. Especially ideal for engines with power valves. A terrific upgrade over OEM synthetic injector oils. Interceptor is one of AMSOIL’s most acclaimed products

AMSOIL Synthetic Injector Oil– A value-priced synthetic 2-stroke oil. Ideal for utility machines, fan-cooled models or older high-performance engines. Suitable for use with power valves.

AMSOIL Dominator 2-Stroke Racing Oil– For racing engines only. Provides industry-leading protection and performance under extreme loads.

Which 2-Stroke Oil For Ski-Doo With BoonDocker Turbo?

Tech Discussion

A reader asks: I’ve got a 2015 Ski-Doo Summit X 800R with a BoonDocker turbo kit. BoonDocker suggests their T2C 2-Stroke Injector Oil. I’d like to go with an AMSOIL option. Would Dominator racing oil or Interceptor be suitable for turbo use?

Our answer: We would recommend Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil, rather than the Dominator Racing 2-Stroke Oil for your turbo-charged E-TEC engine.

AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Injector OilThe main reason is cleanliness. Ski-Doo E-TEC engines are low-emissions and very high-tech. Clean engine internals and power valves are absolutely vital for proper operation. Interceptor is loaded with detergent additives. These additives prevent carbon and varnish deposits from forming. Interceptor has undergone exhaustive testing to prove its worth in Ski-Doo E-TEC engines. It is ideal for all of the latest 2-stroke motors.

Dominator 2-Stroke Oil is purely a racing oil. It is meant for engines that are frequently torn down. For that reason, it does not need to contain the level of detergents that would be preferable for E-TEC engines. Another vital factor is that snowmobile engines used for recreational riding may not run hot enough to completely burn Dominator’s additive package. This may apply even to turbo-charged engines used in hard trail and mountain riding.

Interceptor will deliver exceptional wear control in turbo-charged 2-stroke engines. It would not be considered a “step down” from Dominator for this application.

Two-Stroke Oil For Turbo Kits With A Separate Oil Tank

Some 2-stroke snowmobile turbo-chargers receive oil directly from the stock oil injection system while some kits utilize an add-on oil tank. Two-stroke oil is often suggested as the turbo lubricant in these auxiliary tanks. AMSOIL Interceptor is an ideal product for use in these cases. One of the main requirements for turbo lubrication is fast flow in cold weather. Interceptor pours down to -56°C (-69°F). It provides consistent turbo bearing protection during cold weather.

AMSOIL Interceptor also offers a wide range of top-end features. These include low-smoke, world-class wear protection, low-friction, resistance to extreme heat, internal corrosion prevention and a competitive price tag.

Does AMSOIL Dominator Two-Stroke Oil Cause Rust?

Tech Discussion
AMSOIL DOMINATOR Synthetic 2-Cycle Racing Oil

Does AMSOIL Dominator Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil Cause Internal Engine Rust?

A reader asks: I’ve heard that AMSOIL Dominator 2-Stroke Oil can cause internal engine rust. Is there any truth to this?

Answer: This 100% not true. We have also seen internet chatter suggesting that Dominator Synthetic 2-Stroke Racing Oil causes rust on engine internals like cranks, piston and cylinder walls or at least leaves these parts vulnerable to rust.

AMSOIL Dominator contains hearty anti-rust/corrosion additives, so AMSOIL did their part to protect engines. There absolutely no aspect of the Dominator 2-Cycle formula that can promote rust formation. But can rust still develop, even when using a good two-stroke oil? Yes!

What Is A Major Cause of Internal Rust in Stored Engines?

The main culprit behind rust formation in engine internals is the alcohol content in gasoline and some racing gas. If someone’s engine has internal rust using Dominator, you can bet that the fuel used is either pump gasoline with ethanol (ethyl alcohol) content or racing fuel with methanol (methyl alcohol) or ethanol.

Alcohol fervently absorbs atmospheric moisture through vents and fuel tanks and gas cans. This moisture makes its way into the engine and during storage can cause destructive engine part rust.

Bottom Line: Any two or four-stroke engine can be prone to internal engine rust if a fuel with alcohol content is used prior to long-term inactivity. That can even include engines using quality two-stroke oils that contain an anti-rust protection.

How Can Internal Engine Rust Be Prevented?

1. Avoid pump gasoline with ethanol content.

Ethanol should be avoided for all small engines and high performance (or racing) two-stroke and four-stroke engines. It gathers moisture which can cause rust during storage. Ethanol can also combine with moisture to cause seizure during operation. If you are using a race fuel with methanol or other alcohol content, definitely consider the next two points.

2. Fog the engine prior to storage (important!).

Remove that air cleaner and start the engine. Spray engine fogging oil into the intake until the exhaust starts to get smoky. Immediately shut down the engine. Remove the spark plug(s) and spray engine fog into the cylinder(s). Crank over engine to distribute fog oil. This process will go long way toward preventing corrosion inside the engine.

3. Mix in a Fuel Additive.

Some gasoline additives (like the AMSOIL Quickshot that we offer) dissipate moisture so that it can’t be assimilated into alcohol portion of the fuel. Therefore any moisture that does get into the fuel will not collect into significant amounts. Quickshot has detergents that clean up any moisture-related issues and also provides medium-term fuel stabilization.
