Maximum Wear Defense
Not all gear lubes are created equal. AMSOIL has loaded Severe Gear 75W-90 with the best quality extreme pressure (EP) additives available. These EP additives are designed to withstand sudden shock loads and long periods of heavy torque. The synthetic base oil is formulated to offer steady viscosity protection day-in and day-out over long service intervals. In the wear charts below, note Severe Gear 75W-90’s performance in comparison testing versus Mobil 1 75W-90, Castrol Syntec, Redline Synthetic 75W-90, Lucas 75W-90 and more.
Flows in Extreme Cold
With a cold-pour point of -48°C, Severe Gear 75W-90 offers instant oil flow and low resistance when you start up on the coldest of mornings. In the Brookfield Viscosity comparison chart below, a higher “centipoise” reading equals poorer cold weather performance. The maximum Brookfield viscosity for the 75W-90 grade is 150,000 centipoise. Note that Red Line, Royal Purple and Lucas gear lubes are out of grade in this testing.
Steady Viscosity Protection in Extreme Heat
When exposed to towing, heavy loads or intense heat, AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 Synthetic Oil maintains very steady viscosity and reliable film strength. Severe Gear 75W-90 will not thin out or form deposits, offering steadfast protection from one end of the temperature spectrum to the other.
Lowers Friction for Improved Efficiency
AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 proprietary synthetic formula lowers friction, so less power is required to drive differentials and gearboxes. Performance is also enhanced by the lowered friction and this benefit is amplified as AMSOIL synthetic oil is used in other vehicle components.
Conditions Seals to Prevent Leaks
Today’s synthetic gear lubes don’t cause leaks; they actually prevent them. AMSOIL’s Severe Gear formula is designed to keeps seal pliable and supple over long periods. This attribute is especially ideal for high mileage cars or stored cars that are rarely driven.
Inhibits Rust and Corrosion
Gears, bearings and other components are not only protected from wear, they are kept pristine from rust in case of condensation or moisture ingestion.
Limited Slip Differentials: Is an Adding a Friction Modifier or Additive Necessary?
AMSOIL Severe Gear does contain additives for limited slip differentials, but there are occasions where differential chatter can occur. As a precaution, we recommend adding roughly two-thirds of a bottle of AMSOIL Slip-Lock Limited Slip additive or the equivalent OEM friction modifier additive.

Mixing AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 with Other Brands
AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 Synthetic Oil is compatible with all other brands of conventional, semi-synthetic and synthetic gear oils. While you can safely mix AMSOIL Synthetic Oil with other brands, this will reduce the drain interval and performance capabilities of AMSOIL oil.
The use of any aftermarket oil additives (other than limited-slip friction modifiers) is definitely NOT recommended.
Applications for AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 Synthetic Oil
This product is ideal for applications suggesting the following industry specifications where a 75W-90, 75W-85, 80W-90, 85W-90, SAE 80 or SAE 90 is specified:
- API GL-5
- API MT-1
- Dana SHAES 234

This product is ideal for automotive, heavy duty truck, industrial or agricultural equipment.
Service Life of AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 Synthetic Oil
Note: These service intervals do not apply in situations where water immersion occurs. Severe Gear 75W-90 must be changed frequently under these conditions.
Change at 100,000 miles (160,000 km) or the interval as prescribed by the OEM (whichever is longer).
Change at 50,000 miles (80,000 km).
*Severe service can be described as racing, frequent towing, snow-plowing, hauling or frequently dusty conditions.
Heavy Duty Class 8 Truck
Change at intervals up to 250,000 miles (400,000 km) or follow the OEM recommendation for synthetic oil (whichever comes first).
Heavy Duty Off-Road
Change at intervals up to 120,000 miles (190,000 km) or follow the OEM recommendation for synthetic oil (whichever comes first). If these recommendations do not apply, change at twice the OEM oil change interval for conventional oil.
