A reader asks: I’ve got a Volvo-Penta marine engine. The recommended engine oil is straight SAE 30. What do you suggest?

AMSOIL 4-Stroke Marine Synthetic 10W-30 Engine OilOur answer: AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Marine Engine Oil would be at the top of our list. The “straight-weight” SAE 30 recommendation is derived from antiquated thinking on motor oil. Some conventional multi-viscosity motor oils could be prone to shearing and thinning when exposed to extended periods of heavy loads. The AMSOIL Marine 10W-30 is highly resistant to shear down, so that simply isn’t a factor. AMSOIL Marine 10W-30 would meet the viscosity requirements of your engine through the entire service interval.

It is important to note that AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Marine Engine Oil contains very powerful anti-rust/corrosion ingredients for marine use. This product was engineered to stand up to all of the rigors of marine use.

Why Is Shearing An Issue With Some Motor Oil Formulas?

One of the main reasons that some multi-grade motor oils are highly prone to shearing is that they may contain “viscosity index improvers”. “VI” improvers expand with heat to prevent the motor oil from thinning out as engine temperatures rise. Imagine tiny springs that expand when exposed to heat. The problem with VI improvers is that eventually they can shear down reducing the overall viscosity of the motor oil. This compromises the oil’s ability to fight wear in extreme heat and contributes to depositing. Some conventional motor oils can contain up to 20 percent VI improvers by volume. They offer no benefits in terms of lubrication.

AMSOIL motor oils do not contain VI improvers. The synthetic chemistry of AMSOIL Marine 10W-30 makes it highly resistant to heat and shearing. That’s why it is the perfect candidate for Volvo-Penta engines that suggest an SAE 30 motor oil.

We do have a motor oil that could be consider a straight SAE 30. AMSOIL SAE 30/10W-30 Synthetic Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil is suitable for diesel and gasoline engines. We would still lean toward AMSOIL Marine 10W-30 because of the obvious benefits of the marine anti-rust/corrosion package.

A reader asks: How long is motor oil usable after the bottle has been opened?

Our answer: Once the seal has been cracked on a bottle of motor oil, the remaining oil should be used up within one year. This guideline also applies to transmission oil and gear oil. Opened bottles of both synthetic and conventional motor oils would have a similar lifespan.

Three Reasons Why Motor Oil Should Be Used Within A Year Of Opening

  1. Condensation- After the seal on the bottle has been broken, the interior is more prone to condensation. Once the oil level in the bottle is lowered, there is more open space for condensation to develop.
  2. Oxidation- As the motor oil becomes exposed to oxygen over time, the chemical makeup of the motor oil changes. Simply put, once the oxidation process has started in motor oil, the capabilities of the oil are severely limited and unpredictable. Therefore, that partial bottle of motor oil that has been sitting on shelf for several years should be used in an oil can or sent to recycling.
  3. Additive Fallout- Over time, the ingredients that make up the motor oil formula can start to degrade. This compromises the capabilities and service life of the motor oil. This process would likely take much longer than a year. This can happen in sealed bottles that have been stored for too long as well.

Motor Oil Storage Tips

  • Store motor oil in dry conditions. Don’t leave motor oil bottles out in the yard or in the back of the truck.
  • Do not store the oil in temperatures below it’s cold-pour-point. If the motor oil freezes and “gels”, this will shorten the lifespan of the motor oil.
  • The ideal storage temperature range for motor oil is between 0°C (32°F) and 29°C (85°F).

Shelf Life Of Unopened Motor Oil Bottles

The shelf life of sealed, unopened motor oil, transmission fluid or gear oil is roughly 5 years. Please note the storage tips above to maximize the shelf life of new motor oil.

We recently had a customer ask us about which oil to use when breaking-in new or rebuilt Briggs & Stratton kart racing engines. Our view was always that these engines could be broken-in using Briggs & Stratton/AMSOIL 4T Synthetic Racing Oil. The customer also contacted Briggs & Stratton to get their official break-in procedure. Below is their response.

Here are the official break-in steps  from Briggs & Stratton. 

The 206 engine ships without oil. There may be a small amount of oil residue in the crankcase. This would be from power testing of the engine. Only use Briggs & Stratton 4T Racing Oil by Amsoil. We engineered this oil specifically for our racing engines. Using automotive or other karting oils can have very negative consequences. There isn’t another oil that will offer better power output or protection.

Note that many of the break-in opinions on the internet are based on outdated information and incorrect beliefs. Here are our break-in recommendations:

  • Add 14 ounces of Briggs & Stratton/AMSOIL 4T Synthetic Racing Oil
  • Drive kart for for 10 minutes at varying RPM.
  • Let cool and do it again.
  • Let cool and do it again.
  • At this point, drain the oil while warm. This will keep any break-in particles suspended in the oil and easier to evacuate.
  • After an hour of operation, check the valve lash (as per Brigg’s specifications). Heat cycles help parts relieve any stresses held in during manufacturing. In our valve train, this usually opens lash slightly.

A reader asks: I’ve got a 2015 Ski-Doo Summit X 800R with a BoonDocker turbo kit. BoonDocker suggests their T2C 2-Stroke Injector Oil. I’d like to go with an AMSOIL option. Would Dominator racing oil or Interceptor be suitable for turbo use?

Our answer: We would recommend Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil, rather than the Dominator Racing 2-Stroke Oil for your turbo-charged E-TEC engine.

AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Injector OilThe main reason is cleanliness. Ski-Doo E-TEC engines are low-emissions and very high-tech. Clean engine internals and power valves are absolutely vital for proper operation. Interceptor is loaded with detergent additives. These additives prevent carbon and varnish deposits from forming. Interceptor has undergone exhaustive testing to prove its worth in Ski-Doo E-TEC engines. It is ideal for all of the latest 2-stroke motors.

Dominator 2-Stroke Oil is purely a racing oil. It is meant for engines that are frequently torn down. For that reason, it does not need to contain the level of detergents that would be preferable for E-TEC engines. Another vital factor is that snowmobile engines used for recreational riding may not run hot enough to completely burn Dominator’s additive package. This may apply even to turbo-charged engines used in hard trail and mountain riding.

Interceptor will deliver exceptional wear control in turbo-charged 2-stroke engines. It would not be considered a “step down” from Dominator for this application.

Two-Stroke Oil For Turbo Kits With A Separate Oil Tank

Some 2-stroke snowmobile turbo-chargers receive oil directly from the stock oil injection system while some kits utilize an add-on oil tank. Two-stroke oil is often suggested as the turbo lubricant in these auxiliary tanks. AMSOIL Interceptor is an ideal product for use in these cases. If you have a rear-view mirror that won’t stay fastened to the windshield, this may be an extra tough solution.

Our rear-view mirror also holds an aftermarket back-up camera screen/rear-view mirror combo. This places extra weight on the rear-view mirror bond and causes the mirror to come crashing down every 18 months (or so). This was often brought on by very cold weather or rough roads.

After the latest failure, we searched for an extra-tough rear-view mirror glue. We contacted the good people at Permatex to see if they had any recommendations. Permatex produces rear-view mirror adhesives for the commercial and consumer market. They are also a world-leader in automotive and industrial bonding agents and sealants.

Permatex Ultra GreyWe lucked into a conversion with an extra-helpful technician at Permatex. He gave us the scoop on a trial being performed with one of their gasket-maker products tested as a rear-view mirror glue. He hinted that this product may actually do a better job in this application than their commercially available rear-view mirror adhesive kits. That product is Permatex “Ultra Grey”. We do not sell this product and have no relationship with Permatex.

Permatex describes Ultra Grey as a “rigid, high-torque RTV silicone gasket maker”. Our contact at Permatex raved about the abilities of Ultra Grey and offered that testing in this alternate duty as a rear-view mirror adhesive had been very promising. We were eager to give Ultra Grey a try.

The Process To Re-attach Your Rear-View Mirror To Windshield With Permatex Ultra Grey

  1. Use a painter’s razor blade to strip off old rear-view mirror glue from the windshield surface.
  2. Remove “button” from mirror assembly. The button is the part that is bonded to the windshield. Most buttons simply twist off of the mirror assembly. If unsure, search the internet for the mirror button removal procedure for your vehicle.
  3. Sand button on flat surface to remove glue. Any grit of sand paper will do.
  4. Clean glass and button with Dawn or Palmolive dish soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do not use alcohol or Windex to clean this area as they are astringents. They will leave a residue in glass pores.
  5. Allow glass and button dry thoroughly.
  6. Apply a healthy dot of Ultra Grey in center of button.
  7. Press button firmly onto glass and hold for a few minutes.
  8. Secure button with painter’s tape. Do not install the mirror onto the button yet. Drop Of Permatex Ultra Grey On Mirror Button
  9. The Ultra Grey instructions suggest that the product will fully cure in 24 hours. We waited a full 48 hours (in summer weather) for Ultra Grey to cure before installing the mirror on the button. We wanted to be 100% sure that the product was fully cured in order to give this trial an honest chance. 

Still Holding

The mirror has been holding now for several months and counting. With Ultra Grey’s ultra-wide operating temperature range (-65°F to 500°F), we hope that winter-induced failures are a thing of the past. Hopefully it also provides extra security on rough roads.

Rear-View Mirror Fastened With Permatex Ultra Grey

We will post future revisions to this topic in this space. We certainly hope that we never have to revisit this task again.

Ultra Grey also seems to do a great job fastening door seals and body trim. This seems to be a very versatile and competent product.

A reader asks: I have just changed oil in my car and I’m now going away for five months. The car will be in storage for that time. Do I need to change the oil again after the five-month storage period? The oil used was AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-20.

Our answer: No, there would be no need to change the oil after this storage period. Signature Series has an exceptionally high capacity to fight acids. As it is a premium, long-life motor oil, your engine would be protected during and after storage.

After you remove the car from storage, do not push Signature Series beyond its recommended one-year service interval (or the 25,000 mile limit, whichever comes first). The limit would be one year from the day your oil was changed.

When using lesser motor oil brands, change the oil slightly earlier than normal after storage. The motor oil is fighting acids and degrading during storage.

Change oil prior to storage, rather than after. It is best to drain the acids and combustion by-products held in the motor oil before storage. Installing new motor oil with fresh acid-fighting capabilities is the best course of action.

Bonus Tip

Before storing your car, fill the fuel tank completely so that there is no space for condensation to form. During the fill-up, add a fuel stabilizer (like AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer) to prevent fuel degradation and injector (or carburetor) deposits during the months in storage. This will allow for perfect performance after you put the car back into service.

Conclusion

We are quite excited about the new 12,000 mile/ one year drain interval of XL Series. This longer interval is likely conservative considering how AMSOIL products perform in the real world. AMSOIL has a tendency to under-sell and over-deliver.
