We recently had a customer ask us about which oil to use when breaking-in new or rebuilt Briggs & Stratton kart racing engines. Our view was always that these engines could be broken-in using Briggs & Stratton/AMSOIL 4T Synthetic Racing Oil. The customer also contacted Briggs & Stratton to get their official break-in procedure. Below is their response.

Here are the official break-in steps  from Briggs & Stratton. 

The 206 engine ships without oil. There may be a small amount of oil residue in the crankcase. This would be from power testing of the engine. Only use Briggs & Stratton 4T Racing Oil by Amsoil. We engineered this oil specifically for our racing engines. Using automotive or other karting oils can have very negative consequences. There isn’t another oil that will offer better power output or protection.

Note that many of the break-in opinions on the internet are based on outdated information and incorrect beliefs. Here are our break-in recommendations:

  • Add 14 ounces of Briggs & Stratton/AMSOIL 4T Synthetic Racing Oil
  • Drive kart for for 10 minutes at varying RPM.
  • Let cool and do it again.
  • Let cool and do it again.
  • At this point, drain the oil while warm. This will keep any break-in particles suspended in the oil and easier to evacuate.
  • After an hour of operation, check the valve lash (as per Brigg’s specifications). Heat cycles help parts relieve any stresses held in during manufacturing. In our valve train, this usually opens lash slightly.

A reader asks: I’ve got a 2015 Ski-Doo Summit X 800R with a BoonDocker turbo kit. BoonDocker suggests their T2C 2-Stroke Injector Oil. I’d like to go with an AMSOIL option. Would Dominator racing oil or Interceptor be suitable for turbo use?

Our answer: We would recommend Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil, rather than the Dominator Racing 2-Stroke Oil for your turbo-charged E-TEC engine.

AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Injector OilThe main reason is cleanliness. Ski-Doo E-TEC engines are low-emissions and very high-tech. Clean engine internals and power valves are absolutely vital for proper operation. Interceptor is loaded with detergent additives. These additives prevent carbon and varnish deposits from forming. Interceptor has undergone exhaustive testing to prove its worth in Ski-Doo E-TEC engines. It is ideal for all of the latest 2-stroke motors.

Dominator 2-Stroke Oil is purely a racing oil. It is meant for engines that are frequently torn down. For that reason, it does not need to contain the level of detergents that would be preferable for E-TEC engines. Another vital factor is that snowmobile engines used for recreational riding may not run hot enough to completely burn Dominator’s additive package. This may apply even to turbo-charged engines used in hard trail and mountain riding.

Interceptor will deliver exceptional wear control in turbo-charged 2-stroke engines. It would not be considered a “step down” from Dominator for this application.

Two-Stroke Oil For Turbo Kits With A Separate Oil Tank

Some 2-stroke snowmobile turbo-chargers receive oil directly from the stock oil injection system while some kits utilize an add-on oil tank. Two-stroke oil is often suggested as the turbo lubricant in these auxiliary tanks. AMSOIL Interceptor is an ideal product for use in these cases. One of the main requirements for turbo lubrication is fast flow in cold weather. Interceptor pours down to -56°C (-69°F). It provides consistent turbo bearing protection during cold weather.

If you have a rear-view mirror that won’t stay fastened to the windshield, this may be an extra tough solution.

Our rear-view mirror also holds an aftermarket back-up camera screen/rear-view mirror combo. This places extra weight on the rear-view mirror bond and causes the mirror to come crashing down every 18 months (or so). This was often brought on by very cold weather or rough roads.

After the latest failure, we searched for an extra-tough rear-view mirror glue. We contacted the good people at Permatex to see if they had any recommendations. Permatex produces rear-view mirror adhesives for the commercial and consumer market. They are also a world-leader in automotive and industrial bonding agents and sealants.

Permatex Ultra GreyWe lucked into a conversion with an extra-helpful technician at Permatex. He gave us the scoop on a trial being performed with one of their gasket-maker products tested as a rear-view mirror glue. He hinted that this product may actually do a better job in this application than their commercially available rear-view mirror adhesive kits. That product is Permatex “Ultra Grey”. We do not sell this product and have no relationship with Permatex.

Permatex describes Ultra Grey as a “rigid, high-torque RTV silicone gasket maker”. Our contact at Permatex raved about the abilities of Ultra Grey and offered that testing in this alternate duty as a rear-view mirror adhesive had been very promising. We were eager to give Ultra Grey a try.

The Process To Re-attach Your Rear-View Mirror To Windshield With Permatex Ultra Grey

  1. Use a painter’s razor blade to strip off old rear-view mirror glue from the windshield surface.
  2. Remove “button” from mirror assembly. The button is the part that is bonded to the windshield. Most buttons simply twist off of the mirror assembly. If unsure, search the internet for the mirror button removal procedure for your vehicle.
  3. Sand button on flat surface to remove glue. Any grit of sand paper will do.
  4. Clean glass and button with Dawn or Palmolive dish soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do not use alcohol or Windex to clean this area as they are astringents. They will leave a residue in glass pores.
  5. Allow glass and button dry thoroughly.
  6. Apply a healthy dot of Ultra Grey in center of button.
  7. Press button firmly onto glass and hold for a few minutes.
  8. Secure button with painter’s tape. Do not install the mirror onto the button yet. Drop Of Permatex Ultra Grey On Mirror Button
  9. The Ultra Grey instructions suggest that the product will fully cure in 24 hours. We waited a full 48 hours (in summer weather) for Ultra Grey to cure before installing the mirror on the button. We wanted to be 100% sure that the product was fully cured in order to give this trial an honest chance. 

Still Holding

The mirror has been holding now for several months and counting. With Ultra Grey’s ultra-wide operating temperature range (-65°F to 500°F), we hope that winter-induced failures are a thing of the past. Hopefully it also provides extra security on rough roads.

Rear-View Mirror Fastened With Permatex Ultra Grey

We will post future revisions to this topic in this space. We certainly hope that we never have to revisit this task again.

Ultra Grey also seems to do a great job fastening door seals and body trim. This seems to be a very versatile and competent product.

A reader asks: I have just changed oil in my car and I’m now going away for five months. The car will be in storage for that time. Do I need to change the oil again after the five-month storage period? The oil used was AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-20.

Our answer: No, there would be no need to change the oil after this storage period. Signature Series has an exceptionally high capacity to fight acids. As it is a premium, long-life motor oil, your engine would be protected during and after storage.

After you remove the car from storage, do not push Signature Series beyond its recommended one-year service interval (or the 25,000 mile limit, whichever comes first). The limit would be one year from the day your oil was changed.

When using lesser motor oil brands, change the oil slightly earlier than normal after storage. The motor oil is fighting acids and degrading during storage.

Change oil prior to storage, rather than after. It is best to drain the acids and combustion by-products held in the motor oil before storage. Installing new motor oil with fresh acid-fighting capabilities is the best course of action.

Bonus Tip

Before storing your car, fill the fuel tank completely so that there is no space for condensation to form. During the fill-up, add a fuel stabilizer (like AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer) to prevent fuel degradation and injector (or carburetor) deposits during the months in storage. This will allow for perfect performance after you put the car back into service.

New Signature Series Test Data

AMSOIL performed extensive testing on the new Signature Series formula and the results were very impressive. Here are the highlights.

Engine Wear Testing

Signature Series 0W-20 (the lightest grade) was subjected to the Sequence IVA test. In this test, an engine alternates between 50 minutes of idling and 10 minutes of high RPM operation for 100 hours. This simulates conditions that can create excessive wear. Upon completion of the test, the camshaft was removed and measured for wear in 84 places. Signature Series showed 75 per cent less wear than required by the API SN specification.

Low-Speed Pre-Ignition Test

Many of today’s engines employ gasoline direct injection (GDI) systems. GDI engines can be prone to oil-related deposits. Deposits can cause low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI). This type of pre-ignition can cause poor operation and engine damage. Using the General Motors LSPI testing protocol, the new AMSOIL Signature Series formula provided 100% prevention against this issue.

Turbocharger Protection Testing

Turbochargers are back and more popular than ever. Hot turbos are notorious for being very hard on motor oil. AMSOIL put new Signature Series through the GM Turbo Coking Test. In this test, the motor oil is put through 2000 cycles of extreme heat soaks. To pass this test, the temperature within the turbo must not rise beyond 13 per cent. New Signature Series kept the temperature increase at just 3.6 per cent. This was 72 per cent better than the minimum requirement for the GM dexos 2 Gen 2 specification.

Astonishing Horsepower Preservation

This was our favorite and most telling “real world” test. AMSOIL installed the new Signature Series 5W-30 in a Ford F-150 with the turbocharged 3.5L Ecoboost engine. They measured the horsepower and torque output at the beginning of the test and then ran the truck for 100,000 miles (160,000 km). Oil was changed at 25,000 mile intervals. At the conclusion of the test, the engine was tested on the dynamometer again. As the chart below shows, horsepower and torque output remained all but unchanged. This is testament to AMSOIL’s extraordinary wear control.

Resistance To Viscosity Increase Test

The idea behind the Sequence IIV Test is to determine how well an engine oil resists thickening when exposed to extreme heat. AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 was installed in a test Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar engine. The test is then conducted with oil temperatures steady at 304°F. This is 100°F above normal oil temperatures. Signature Series thickened by just 6 per cent in this difficult test. The passing grade in this is to keep thickening under 150 per cent.

Volatility Resistance Test

This test measures how well a motor oil can resist oil burn-off. In the NOACK Volatility Test, a motor oil is exposed to very hot airflow set at 482°F for one hour. The oil is then tested to determine how much oil had burned off. New AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-20 lost just 5.8 per cent of its volume in this torture test. The API SN limit is 15 per cent.

AMSOIL used to offer the BMK25 dual remote system for Ram/Cummins engines, but this kit was discontinued back in 2012.

The single remote AMSOIL BMK34 bypass kit fits 5.9L and 6.7L Ram/Cummins engines made from 2004 to present. It is one of the easiest systems to install. This is a very cost-effective way to reduce wear and extend oil life.

The BMK34 kit includes everything needed for installation. The bypass mount and filter, all hoses/fittings and a billet aluminum oil fill cap (used to return clean oil into the engine) are included. A reader asks: I’ve got a 2012 Cadillac Escalade that calls for a 75W-85 API GL-5 gear oil in the rear differential. AMSOIL’ s application guide suggests Severe Gear 75W-90. Is this correct? Can I safely replace 75W-85 with 75W-90?

Our answer: Yes, 75W-85 gear oil can most definitely be replaced by 75W-90. In fact, we know that some GM dealers will use 75W-90 gear lube in applications where Chevrolet/Buick/GMC/Cadillac suggests 75W-85.

Why Does GM Suggest 75W-85 GL-5 Gear Oil In Some Cars And Trucks?

We can only speculate on why GM specifies 75W-85 for some vehicles. Here are our theories.

  1.  To boost mileage. Auto manufacturers have to meet government-mandated fuel economy standards across their product lines. If a car maker doesn’t meet these fuel economy targets, they can be subject to big fines. These fines can be in the tens of millions of dollars. That’s why automakers are going to lighter oils in the engines and transmissions and differentials.
    You may not notice the fraction of a mile-per-gallon improvement because of the thinner oil in your diff. But the automaker bean counters do and they are banking on every trick in the book to boost collective fuel economy.
  2.  A 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil is relatively rare. Therefore, consumers will feel that the safe choice to go back to the dealer for service. There will be a natural fear to deviate from the exact viscosity in the owner’s manual. Again, we know for a fact that some GM dealers simply use 75W-90 anyway.
