Are WIX WF10255NP Fuel Filters Suitable For RAM 6.7L Engines?

A reader asks: I’ve got a 2018 RAM 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins diesel engine. Your application guide shows that the WIX WF10255NP fuel filter is suitable for my engine. However, the bottom of the WIX part looks completely different from the stock Mopar fuel filter (part # 68157291AA). The Mopar filter has an oval opening and the WIX filter has a round opening. Can you confirm that the WIX fuel filter is correct my engine?

The round WIX opening versus the oval Mopar opening on these fuel filters is a non-issue. This feature makes no difference in the installation, compatibility or functionality.

Also, you may note that the Mopar filter has two separate elements (an inner and outer), whereas the WIX filter has one thick element. WIX technical staff tell us that the outer element on the Mopar filter is there strictly to gather moisture. The inner element handles the fuel filtration. WIX employs one thick synthetic media handle both moisture capture and fuel filtration.

Despite the different approach, WIX does not give away protective capabilities using a single element. The WIX WF10255NP fuel filter has a nominal micron rating of 2. The Mopar 68157291AA outer element has a micron rating of 5, while the inner element stops particles down to 3 microns.

The 3.0L EcoDiesel engine has been redesigned for 2020-21. Therefore, these motors now require a different motor oil type. The new third generation EcoDiesel motor will require a 5W-40 motor oil meeting the FCA MS-12991 standard. This new diesel engine is an option for Ram 1500, Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Wrangler models.

About The Chrysler MS-12991 Motor Oil Specification

MS-12991 is not a new motor oil specification and was not conceived specifically for the Gen 3 EcoDiesel motor.  It has been around since at least 2012. The Fiat 1.4L Turbo-charged MultiAir gasoline engine first required motor oil meeting this spec. This engine was found in the Fiat 500 starting in 2014 and Jeep Renegade starting in 2015.

This AMSOIL European FS 5W-40 has met the MS-12991 standard since 2013.

The formulation of AMSOIL FS 5W-40 is 100% synthetic and has “Full-SAPS” (sulfated ash, phosphorus, sulfur). It meets the additive requirements of the FCA MS-12991 motor oil standard. “SAPS” levels are a common consideration in the European motor oil category.

Is 10W-30 Oil Too Thin For Ram 6.7L Cummins Engines?

A reader asks: I’ve got a 2019 Ram 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins diesel. My manual says to use 10W-30 motor oil meeting the MS-10902 or API CJ-4 specification. I’m used to running a 5W-40 or 15W-40 in my previous trucks. Isn’t 10W-30 a bit thin for this engine?

Our answer: We can assure you that a good 10W-30 diesel motor oil is safe for your engine. But let’s discuss an important detail to watch for on the oil bottle label. This detail will improve the odds that your engine will receive the best possible wear protection.

When buying diesel motor oil, look for the “API CK-4” designation. API CK-4 is the very latest diesel engine oil standard. It is backward-compatible with API CJ-4 and Chrysler MS-10902 (and therefore warranty-approved).

Is API CK-4 An Upgrade Over API CJ-4 Diesel Oils?

Yes. The API CK-4 standard has very lofty requirements in terms of oxidation resistance, shear stability and wear resistance. It is dramatically superior to API CI-4+ motor oils you may have used 15 years ago. It is even a significant step up from the previous API CJ-4 standard. One of the primary goals of the API CK-4 spec was to allow for the use of lower viscosity oils without sacrificing wear protection.

Why Did Chrysler Decide To Go With 10W-30 In The 6.7L Cummins?

The move toward thinner oils in engines, transmissions and differentials has been going on for years. The reason is simple. Automakers are under constant pressure to meet government-mandated fuel economy targets. Going to lower viscosity oils is a relatively simple way to make marginal mileage gains.

It may seem like wear control is being sacrificed to achieve slightly better fuel economy. This has not turned out to be the case. The motor oil industry is constantly raising the bar to strike that balance between improved fuel economy and satisfactory wear protection. The API CK-4 specification achieves this balance.

Is 5W-40 An Option In Newer 6.7L Cummins Engines?

All this being said, Chrysler does suggest that 5W-40 engine oil can be used in temperatures under 0°F (-18°C). So 5W-40 is certainly secondary option. If your engine is seriously modified or if the truck is used for extreme towing, 5W-40 is certainly viable. But again, under most conditions, 10W-30 diesel oil is perfectly safe.

Looking For Oil Filter Relocation And By-Pass Kit For Ram/Cummins 6.7L

A reader asks: Do you offer a dual bypass filter kit for the Ram Cummins 6.7L engine? I would like to move the stock oil filter and have the bypass filter in the same location.

Our answer: AMSOIL offers only a single remote bypass oil filter system for the Ram/Cummins 6.7L engine. The universal AMSOIL BMK23 dual bypass system cannot be adapted to the AMSOIL BMK34 Bypass Kit For Ram/Cummins Diesel EnginesCummins 6.7L diesel engine. AMSOIL used to offer the BMK25 dual remote system for Ram/Cummins engines, but this kit was discontinued back in 2012.

The single remote AMSOIL BMK34 bypass kit fits 5.9L and 6.7L Ram/Cummins engines made from 2004 to present. It is one of the easiest systems to install. This is a very cost-effective way to reduce wear and extend oil life.

The BMK34 kit includes everything needed for installation. The bypass mount and filter, all hoses/fittings and a billet aluminum oil fill cap (used to return clean oil into the engine) are included. The only item not included is a mounting bracket, as this is dependent on the owner’s preferred mounting location.

Benefits Of Bypass Oil Filters

The filtering ability of a bypass oil filter is vastly superior to the stock full-flow oil filter. Regular oil filters catch particles down to about 20 microns. The ultra-dense media of a by-pass oil filter removes fine particles and soot down to 2 microns.
