A reader asks: I’ve got a fleet of restored snowmobiles from the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Regarding 2-stroke oil, I see that there is now a Polaris Vintage 2-Stroke Oil available. Would this product be my best choice?
Our answer: First off, we have no data or test information on Polaris Vintage 2-Stroke Oil. We are sure that it is a perfectly competent product. However, it is a conventional (or mineral) two-cycle oil. We are huge advocates of synthetic oil in two-stroke engines. Do note that older two-stroke engines are 100% compatible with synthetic oil. In fact, the advantages of synthetic oil in classic 2-stroke motors are too numerous to overlook.
There are no specifications listed for the Polaris Vintage Oil. However, we can extrapolate a few things from their product description. The Polaris product page does note that the Vintage 2-Stroke Oil has a heavier viscosity than regular two-cycle oil. Therefore, we can assume that the oil is formulated this way for older engines with some wear and looser tolerances. Be aware that a heavy mineral oil may not flow very quickly in oil-injected engines on very cold days.
Polaris also mentions that this Vintage Oil should not be used in snowmobile engines equipped with variable exhaust power valves. This suggests that carbon deposit build-up is a concern.
Polaris does add a fuel stabilizer component to this Vintage 2-Stroke Oil formula. This is a nice touch. If a two-cycle oil does not offer gasoline preservation, we strongly advocate adding a splash of stabilizer additive to every batch of fuel.
Is Synthetic Oil Better For Vintage 2-Stroke Engines?
We contend that a full-synthetic oil is the most cost-effective upgrade for any older 2-stroke motor. A well-formulated synthetic oil will provide robust wear-control and improved friction reduction. In our opinion, this is a superior approach over simply ratcheting up viscosity for older engines.
AMSOIL’s Synthetic Option For Vintage 2-Stroke Engines
Excellent wear-control from synthetic base oils and robust additives
Outstanding cold-flow properties over mineral oil. Flows down to -63F
Burns clean for low exhaust smoke
Can be used in older engines with variable exhaust power valves
Delivers cleaner operation with less combustion chamber and exhaust port deposits
Contains ingredients that fight internal rust and corrosion
Premix or oil-injection compatible
Priced competitively with OEM mineral 2-stroke oils
Conclusion
In conclusion, older 2-stroke engines do not require a specialized 2-cycle oil. A good synthetic 2-stroke oil will provide maximum wear protection, cleaner operation and offer a performance upgrade.

AMSOIL now offers three distinct, all-climate oil change kits for several Polaris ATV and UTV applications. These new Oil Change Kits For Polaris ATV and UTV were designed for Polaris’s most popular 4-stroke engines.
About AMSOIL Oil Change Kits For Polaris ATV And UTV
Each kit includes the proper amount of AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-50 ATV/UTV Oil and one oil filter. It offers steady performance across a wide temperature range. This oil/filter combo easily withstands heavy loads and extreme heat, while the cold-pour point of -43°C is very winter-capable.
The oil filters have a synthetic-blend media that removes particles down to 20-microns. These oil filters are designed with the optimum dimensions and capacity for each Polaris engine type.
Why Did AMSOIL Make These Oil Change Kits?
Oil change kits are a convenient option for many ATV/UTV owners. Some Polaris owners prefer the “oil-change-in-a-box” route, rather than buying the oil and filter separately. Therefore, AMSOIL opted to design their own kit. The result is an oil change kit that provides maximum performance and ironclad protection for your investment.
Is The Oil Filter In These Kits An AMSOIL “EAOM” Motorcycle/ATV Filter?
No. Due to the higher price of the EAOM oil filters, AMSOIL opted for specially designed synthetic-blend oil filters. The AMSOIL EAOM Motorcycle/ATV/UTV Filters are designed for ultra-long drain intervals and contain very expensive components. Due to these factors, the EAOM oil filters would be overkill and would not be price competitive.
The oil filters supplied in these kits will provide excellent filtration and capacity and are a great match for the factory-recommended service interval.
Where Can I Buy These AMSOIL ATV-UTV Oil Change Kits?
Oildepot sells these kits in Canada and the United States. We ship right to your door with fast delivery. Contact us for a wholesale price list using the form on this page.
The video below shows how quickly Ski-Doo XPS 2-Stroke Fully Synthetic Oil, Polaris VES Synthetic 2-Cycle Snowmobile Oil, Arctic Cat CTEC2 Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil and AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil flow when cooled down to -40°F.
Let’s compare the cold flow capabilities of the three main OEM synthetic 2-stroke oils with AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil. In today’s sophisticated 2-stroke engines, immediate oil flow is vital. But extremely cold temperatures can strain the cold flow capabilities of even the most expensive, high-tech 2-stroke oil.
Ski-Doo, Polaris and Arctic Cat do not publish the cold-pour-points of their 2-stroke oils. The cold-pour-point lab test literally determines the temperature where an oil congeals and stops flowing. AMSOIL Interceptor’s cold-pour-point is -58°C (-72°F). Arctic Cat does make mention that their CTEC2 Synthetic 2-Cycle Oil delivers up to 50% easier cold starts.
Now you may say, “I don’t ride my sled in extreme cold. I don’t need an oil that flows down to -50 below.” Keep in mind that even under relatively normal winter weather, dry starts should be avoided (even for a fraction of a second). Why not use an oil that delivers instant oil circulation? As witnessed in the video, it’s quite apparent that AMSOIL Interceptor flows faster than Ski-Doo XPS Synthetic, Polaris VES Synthetic and Arctic Cat CTEC2 Synthetic.
More Than Just Fast Oil Flow During Cold Starts
So not only does AMSOIL Interceptor deliver world-class cold flow capabilities, it also provides the utmost protection in extreme heat. It is also famous for steadfast wear control, low-smoke and clean power valves over long stretches. We were once privy to an off-the-record comment by a highly placed AMSOIL executive. He said, “If our competitors knew how generously we had formulated Interceptor, they would think we were crazy”. Considering the endless praise Interceptor has received from our customers over the last decade, we can’t doubt that statement.
Lastly, consider Interceptor’s price. With Oildepot’s wholesale programs, Interceptor can be delivered to your doorstep for far less money than the price that your Ski-Doo, Polaris and Arctic Cat dealers are asking for their synthetic 2-stroke oils. About Polaris Oil Prices
The prices listed below for Polaris 2-stroke oil products are based on averages from randomly selected Canadian and US Polaris dealers. Retail prices may vary at other locations.
Polaris VES Full Synthetic 2-Cycle Engine Oil Prices
$54.99 in Canada (per US gallon)
$46.99 in USA (per US gallon)
Previously known as “VES Gold Plus”, VES Full Synthetic is Polaris’s most popular 2-stroke oil for their modern snowmobiles. VES Full Synthetic is formulated to keep variable exhaust power valves clean, emit low exhaust smoke levels deliver acceptable wear protection.
We can offer an outstanding upgrade over VES Full Synthetic that provides elite performance and protection for your Polaris snowmobile engine. AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil is perhaps the most renowned 2-stroke sled oil in the industry. Interceptor delivers ultra-clean power valves, maximum power output, extreme cold weather performance and low-smoke. Strong positive customer feedback reinforces these claims.
Price of Polaris VES Full Synthetic 2-Cycle Engine Oil Versus AMSOIL Interceptor
Depending on your location, AMSOIL Interceptor can be shipped to your door for 20% to 30% less than Polaris VES Full Synthetic 2-Cycle Engine Oil when using our wholesale programs. We would argue that Interceptor is a significant upgrade over VES Synthetic, so it is really win-win for Polaris owners wanting to use a great synthetic oil.
Polaris VES Race Full Synthetic 2-Cycle Engine Oil Prices
$62.99 Canada (per US gallon)
$52.99 USA (per US gallon)
This is Polaris’s top 2-stroke oil that is designed for racing and high-performance trail use. As VES Full Synthetic covers the needs of most high performance snowmobilers, some Polaris dealers do not stock VES Race Oil. VES Race is designed with a high film strength for extra anti-wear protection. VES Race is basically Polaris’s “severe service” 2-stroke oil.
We offer two AMSOIL synthetic substitutes for Polaris VES Race that we would suggest are a strong upgrade at a better price.
For racing and highly modified snowmobile engines (only!), we offer AMSOIL Dominator Synthetic Racing 2-Stroke Oil. Dominator 2-Stroke has a very high film strength that provides an infallible wear barrier during heavy loads and extended periods of extremely hot operating temperatures. This is the exact formula used by AMSOIL’s snocross racing teams, so you are truly buying professional-grade racing oil with Dominator.
For hard recreational riding with relatively stock engines, go with Interceptor. Dominator 2-Stroke Oil is designed for the extreme heat of racing and/or modified engines. Stock engines will not run hot enough to completely burning off Dominator’s additive package. This applies to all stock engines. AMSOIL Interceptor is a great substitute for Polaris VES Race Oil, no matter how hard you push your stock engine.
Price of Polaris VES Race Full Synthetic 2-Cycle Engine Oil Versus AMSOIL
We can smoke the retail price you would pay for VES Synthetic 2-Stroke Race Oil at your Polaris dealer. When purchasing a case of 4 US gallons, both Interceptor and Dominator are well over of 30% cheaper than VES Race Oil. For most locations, that includes shipping right to your door.
Polaris Premium Blue Synthetic Blend 2-Cycle Engine Oil Prices
$44.99 Canada (per US gallon)
$39.00 USA (per US gallon)
Polaris Premium Blue is a semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil offered by Polaris dealers. It is for snowmobile engines without variable exhaust power valves. This could be for older snowmobiles or newer sleds with the 550cc fan-cooled engine. Premium Blue is designed to provide adequate performance at a moderate price.
We can offer two full full synthetic oils that roundly defeat the semi-synthetic Premium Blue in both performance and price. First we have the “AIO” AMSOIL Injector Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil. It can be used in any snowmobile engine, including those with exhaust power valves. Polaris specifies that Premium Blue should not be used in snowmobile engines with power valves. This implies that it will not burn cleanly enough to prevent deposit formation. AIO Injector offers full synthetic benefits including an exceptionally low cold pour point, robust wear control, low smoke and reduced friction.
At the price point for which Polaris is retailing Premium Blue, our first-rate AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil could also be considered as a viable replacement. Interceptor is certainly suitable for older engines, sleds without power valves or the very latest 2-strokes on the market.
Price of Polaris Premium Blue Synthetic Blend 2-Cycle Engine Oil versus AMSOIL Injector Oil
AMSOIL Injector Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil can be shipped to you for around 30% less than you can buy Polaris Premium Blue 2-Stroke Oil. Again this a full synthetic versus a synthetic blend, so in our mind, this is a no-brainer.
The elite quality AMSOIL Interceptor Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil is anywhere from 6% to 15% less money than Premium Blue (depending on your location). Those in the market for Premium Blue may not want to go for this high-end full-synthetic oil. But this illustrates Interceptor’s great value.
Conclusion
Oildepot sells the finest 2-stroke oils in the snowmobile industry at better prices than those found at your Polaris dealer. Contact us using the form on this page or call us at 1-800-748-5781.
A reader asks:I have been using ATF in the front differential of my 2012 Polaris Sportsman 400HO for a while now. I see Amsoil now has specific fluid for Polaris front ends with the Hilliard clutch set-up. Is it OK to keep running the automatic transmission fluid?
ATF may not be the best oil for your Polaris ATV Demand Drive front differential. (photo credit: atvillustrated.com)
Answer: While we know that some Polaris owners with the Demand Drive 4X4 front differential system do use all-purpose automotive ATF, it might not be the best option. Automatic transmission fluid may have acceptable frictional properties to help your 4X4 clutch system engage and disengage in a satisfactory fashion. But it may be lacking in terms of long-term wear control.
Hilliard Corporation supplies the front drive system for your Polaris (and some John Deere Gator models). This front differential contains an electrically actuated clutch that engages and provides power to the front wheels whenever the rear wheels lose traction. The system disengages when the rear wheels regain traction.
AMSOIL designed their Synthetic ATV/UTV Powertrain Fluid to have the proper additives, frictional properties and wear control for Polaris Demand Drive Systems. Its viscosity is 7.4 cSt at 100°C. A typical ATF for automotive use can range from 6.0 to 7.5 cSt range at 100°C.
Overall, its best to use an oil that is designed to work with Direct Drive systems. While ATF may work, it is not guaranteed to be a perfect replacement oil for your Polaris Demand Drive 4X4 system.
