About BMW LL-17FE+ Motor Oil
The BMW LL-17FE+ motor oil standard is a low-SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur) formula in the 0W-20 viscosity range. It is suitable for BMW gasoline, hybrid and diesel engines. The LL-17FE+ specification is designed to offer improved fuel economy over motor oils meeting the BMW LL-01 standard. Products meeting the BMW LL-17FE+ spec must meet fuel economy, corrosion protection, detergent and wear control requirements set by BMW.
About MB 229.71 Motor Oil
The MB 229.71 specification was designed for modern Mercedes-Benz gasoline, hybrid and diesel engines. Motor oils meeting 229.71 must be in the 0W-20 range and contain low-SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur). The additive package of 229.71 oil must be compatible with Mercedes’s latest emissions components. MB 229.71 engine oil must also meet Mercedes-Benz wear standards, including the ability to withstand the rigors of hybrid-engine use.

Mercedes-Benz Models That Use MB 229.71 0W-20 Motor Oil
The following Mercedes-Benz (2019 and newer) suggest a 0W-20 motor oil meeting the MB 229.71 specification. Many of these models also allow for the use of 5W-30 or 5W-40 oil. Consult your owner’s manual for the correct viscosity and motor oil specification for your model.
Like most other European car makers, Mercedes-Benz has long had their own motor oil specifications. While some European car owners may grumble about the fact that finding the correct motor oil for the car can be inconvenient (and possibly expensive). These motor oil standards do remove any doubt from the buying process.
Below is an explanation of each Mercedes motor oil standard along with the AMSOIL European Formula Synthetic Motor Oil that complies with the specification. We sell four different European engines oils formulated to meet the specifications for Mercedes-Benz cars and Sprinter diesel vans.
This obsolete Mercedes motor oil specification was devised for both gasoline and diesel engines back in the late 1990’s. The MB 229.1 spec dictated minimum standards in terms of motor oil detergent levels and soot dispersant content. Motor oils suitable for the MB 229.1 specification required full-SAPS (Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur) levels. The AMSOIL motor oils that cover the MB 229.1 specification are AMSOIL European FS 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil and AMSOIL European FS 0W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil.
MB 229.3
For gasoline and diesel engines covering model years from 1998 to 2004. MB 229.3 compliant motor oils also require high SAPS levels. MB 229.3 differs from the 229.1 spec in that it an MB 229.3 engine oil must also be capable of longer oil change intervals. They must reduce friction to improve fuel economy by a percentage point over 229.1. For cars requiring MB 229.3, use AMSOIL European FS 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil or AMSOIL European FS 0W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil.
MB 229.31
This specification came into effect during the 2003 model year for both gasoline and diesel engines. MB 229.31 motor oils are required to have medium SAPS levels. This makes them compatible with Mercedes Bluetec diesel exhaust particle filters and the catalytic converters on the gasoline engines. Higher SAPS levels of some non-compliant motor oils can foul these emission components and cause operational problems. MB 229.31 motor oils must be designed for a service life of up to 15,000 km. AMSOIL European MS 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil is suitable for cars and Sprinter vans requiring the MB 229.31 engine oil standard.
MB 229.5
For both gasoline and diesel engines, the MB 229.5 specification was released in mid-2002. This specification was designed to be an upgrade over the MB 229.3 spec in terms of fuel economy and oil change interval duration. MB 229.5 motor oils are formulated with high SAPS additive levels. AMSOIL European Formula “Full-SAPS” 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil and AMSOIL European FS 0W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil cover the Mercedes 229.5 engine oil standard.
MB 229.51
Introduced in 2005, MB 229.51 was designed for longer oil life over the MB 229.31 specification. For gasoline and diesel engines. MB 229.51 oils must be capable of staying in service for 20,000 km. MB 229.51 oils must have low to moderate SAPS levels. This makes them compatible with catalysts in gasoline engines and diesel exhaust particle filters. Both the AMSOIL European LS 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil and the AMSOIL European MS 5W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil are designed for MB 229.51 service.
MB 229.71
For 2019 and newer Mercedes-Benz models requiring a 0W-20 engine oil. This low-viscosity specification requires a low-SAPS formulation. MB 229.71 oils are compatible with gasoline, diesel and hybrid engines. AMSOIL SAE 0W-20 LS Synthetic European Engine Oil was introduced in 2020 was designed around the MB 229.71 standard.

Find the proper European motor oil alternate for products from over 30 brands. Updated: July, 2023.
This cross-reference guide suggests an AMSOIL motor oil substitute for most European formula engine oils sold in the United States and Canada.
European car brands such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi require the use of different motor oils than North American and Asian car brands. Why is this? Tight European regulations dictate that their cars are equipped with the latest and most effective emissions equipment. Engine oils have to be compatible with these components. These motor oils also have to be suitable for both gasoline and diesel car engines. European automakers also tend to suggest ultra-long oil change intervals. Therefore, suitable motor oils have to be up to that task.
The European car oil spectrum is now split into three distinct motor oil types based on their “SAPS” levels. SAPS stands for sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur. These are important motor oil additives that can cause complications with some emissions sensors and exhaust treatment devices. Therefore it is vital that European car owners choose a motor oil that meets the industry specification allotted for their car.
We offer a full suite of 100% synthetic engine oils for European cars. Here are the AMSOIL European Car Formulas and the industry specifications they cover.
Important: Please note that product formulations can change without notice. That could change the accuracy of some of the product recommendations listed below. Please make certain that the AMSOIL European Oil of your choice matches the industry specifications recommended in your owner’s manual before using.
