Why Did AMSOIL Add A 5W-40 Option To The Oil Change Kits For Can-Am?

Can-Am generally suggests 5W-40 in their manuals for most models. As AMSOIL did not have a 5W-40 four-stroke engine oil option until recently, they offered their Formula 4-Stroke Powersport Synthetic 0W-40 in the original kits. As this 0W-40 performs and protects almost identically to a 5W-40, this was a perfectly functional choice.

What Is The Difference Between The AMSOIL Four-Stroke 0W-40 And 5W-40 Oils?

As mentioned, both the AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke 0W-40 and ATV/UTV 5W-40 will function identically. However, there are some minor viscosity differences. The 5W-40 has a slightly thicker viscosity. The 0W-40 has a slightly lower cold-pour-point.

Here are the kinematic viscosities for each product measured at both 40°C and 100°C (measured in centistokes).

Should I Use An Oil Change Kit With 5W-40 Or 0W-40?

In practice, there is no wrong answer between the 5W-40 and 0W-40 options. Either will deliver flawless protection and shear stability over the entire service interval. However, there are specific reasons as to why one might choose one over the other.

Can-Am suggests the use of 5W-40 engine oil in most of their ATV and UTV models. If a Can-Am owner is concerned about following this viscosity suggestion to the letter, then choosing the kit with 5W-40 is the easy choice.

The kits with the Formula 4-Stroke Powersport Synthetic 0W-40 will perform equally as well as 5W-40 under most all situations. Where 0W-40 can offer a slight advantage is in extremely cold climates. If an ATV or UTV is being operated all winter long, the 0W-40 option could be considered.

Can I Use Car Motor Oil In My UTV or ATV?

AMSOIL ATV/UTV Synthetic 10W-40 OilQuestion: I was wondering if it is OK to use car engine oil in my ATV?

Our answer: Using a motor oil meant for car engines is not the best option for ATV’s or UTV’s. In the case of ATV’s with manual transmissions and wet-clutches, it can be disastrous. Even if your ATV does not have a manual transmission and wet-clutch, there are better options than automotive motor oil.

Wet-Clutch Risks

Automotive motor oils have friction modifiers which are a major problem for wet-clutches. Friction modifiers can permanently glaze clutch plates. This is only a concern in “shared sumps” where the engine and transmission use the same oil. Car motor oil should also be avoided in stand-alone transmissions.

ATV/UTV’s Without Wet-Clutches Or Manual Transmissions

Most modern ATV/UTV engines do not share oil with the transmission. Therefore wet-clutch compatibility not a concern when choosing a motor oil. However, we would still submit that using a dedicated powersports oil is a sound choice. Automotive motor oils have a different ingredient approach because they have to be compatible with today’s high-tech emissions componentry.

ATV’s and UTV’s do not have the same complex emissions equipment as cars. Therefore, ATV’s can use motor oil with a different formulation approach. Some oil makers such as AMSOIL can pack their ATV/UTV oils with high levels of zinc and phosphorus. This cannot be done with modern car motor oil. Automotive emissions components are not compatible with high levels of these additives.

The latest automotive motor oils are formulated with ashless additives, with much lower levels of zinc and phosphorus. Modern automotive motors oils do an exceptional job for their intended applications. Oils designed for powersports applications are equally effective in ATV and UTV’s.

Some ATV oils can also employ very robust anti-corrosion ingredients. Automotive oils generally do not place an emphasis on corrosion prevention.

What To Look For When Buying An ATV Or UTV Oil

If you can’t find an engine oil marketed for ATV/UTV applications, check the label for “JASO MA” or “JASO MA2” specifications. These standards were devised for motorcycle engine oils that have wet-clutch and transmission capability.

Despite being motorcycle oil specifications, the JASO specs are a good indicator that an engine oil is properly formulated for powersport applications.

It’s National Gasoline Stabilization Day

Lawn Boy Mower and Stihl Leaf Blower and Trimmer

Oildepot declares today to be National Gasoline Stabilization Day. As lawn mowers, motorcycles, ATVs and other equipment with small engines are about to be put away for winter storage, now is the time to give them a run with gasoline treated with fuel stabilizer. Storing small engines with untreated regular-unleaded gasoline is asking for fuel system deposits and possibly expensive repairs next spring.

Here’s what to do.

  • Buy a batch of fresh premium grade gasoline and treat it with gasoline stabilizer. Why premium gasoline? Regular and mid-grade gasoline contains ethanol. Ethanol absorbs moisture and when this mixture degrades, the result is fuel system-clogging deposits.
  • Run your engine. If this is for your lawn mower, mow your lawn one last time or use it to bag up leaves.
  • Just prior to storage, fill the gas tank so that there is no area for condensation to form.
  • Change the engine oil so that your engine internals are protected with fresh motor oil.
  • If you are really particular about maintenance, buy a can of fogging oil and spray a few shots into the (running) engine through the carburetor with the air cleaner removed. Shut down the engine, remove the spark plug and spray a few shots into the cylinder (s) and turn over the engine a few times. Reinstall the spark plug and put the machine away for the winter.
  • If your machine has a battery, be sure to remove it for the winter and store it in a safe location where it will not freeze.

With this regimen, you will never have problems with powersports and lawn/garden equipment not starting in the spring.
