AMSOIL Adds 5W-40 Option To Oil Change Kits For Can-Am

AMSOIL ATV/UTV 5W-40 Oil Change Kit For Can-AmAMSOIL offers complete engine oil kits for most Can-Am* ATV and UTV models. They have now added a second engine oil viscosity option to their Oil Change Kits For Can-Am ATV’s and UTV’s. The original versions of these kits offered only 0W-40 engine oil. Now AMSOIL has added a 5W-40 engine oil option.

Consumers can still choose a kit that offers AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke Powersport Synthetic 0W-40, an oil filter, filter o-ring and a drain-plug washer.

The new kits include AMSOIL ATV/UTV Synthetic 5W-40, an oil filter, filter o-ring and a drain-plug washer.

Why Did AMSOIL Add A 5W-40 Option To The Oil Change Kits For Can-Am?

Can-Am generally suggests 5W-40 in their manuals for most models. As AMSOIL did not have a 5W-40 four-stroke engine oil option until recently, they offered their Formula 4-Stroke Powersport Synthetic 0W-40 in the original kits. As this 0W-40 performs and protects almost identically to a 5W-40, this was a perfectly functional choice.

What Is The Difference Between The AMSOIL Four-Stroke 0W-40 And 5W-40 Oils?

As mentioned, both the AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke 0W-40 and ATV/UTV 5W-40 will function identically. However, there are some minor viscosity differences. The 5W-40 has a slightly thicker viscosity. The 0W-40 has a slightly lower cold-pour-point.

Here are the kinematic viscosities for each product measured at both 40°C and 100°C (measured in centistokes).

Here are the cold-pour-points for the AMSOIL ATV/UTV 5W-40 and Formula 4-Stroke 0W-40. The cold-pour-point is the temperature at which an oil stops flowing.

Should I Use An Oil Change Kit With 5W-40 Or 0W-40?

In practice, there is no wrong answer between the 5W-40 and 0W-40 options. Either will deliver flawless protection and shear stability over the entire service interval. However, there are specific reasons as to why one might choose one over the other.

Can-Am suggests the use of 5W-40 engine oil in most of their ATV and UTV models. If a Can-Am owner is concerned about following this viscosity suggestion to the letter, then choosing the kit with 5W-40 is the easy choice.

The kits with the Formula 4-Stroke Powersport Synthetic 0W-40 will perform equally as well as 5W-40 under most all situations. Where 0W-40 can offer a slight advantage is in extremely cold climates. If an ATV or UTV is being operated all winter long, the 0W-40 option could be considered.

Duramax Diesel Engines: Can You Use 5W-40 Oil In Winter?

AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 5W-40 Synthetic Diesel OilA reader asks: I’ve got a 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 with the L5P Duramax diesel engine. I see that 15W-40 oil is suggested for this engine. Can I use 5W-40 in the winter?

Our answer: Yes, you can certainly use 5W-40 in winter (and summer) in your Duramax. While 15W-40 is suggested as the predominant viscosity for your engine, GM does recommend 5W-40 for temps below -18°C (0°F). AMSOIL’s official stance is that their 5W-40 synthetic diesel oils are safe and perfectly suited for year-round use under all conditions and loads. Naturally, 5W-40 is highly recommended for winter use, but there is absolutely no downside to using it in summer as well.

Is There Any Advantage To Using 15W-40 Over 5W-40?

No. Remember that both 5W-40 and 15W-40 have a 40-weight viscosity. Note that both are offering roughly the same viscosity protection at operating temperature.

The main advantage that 5W-40 offers is faster oil flow during cold-starts.

It is true that 15W-40 has been the predominant diesel oil viscosity for decades. The reason that 15W-40 was a mainstay was its relatively slim spread between the winter weight (15W) and the operating temperature weight (“40”). With previous generations of motor oil technology, a wider spread between winter weight and operating weight (such as 5W-40) was more prone to shearing and thinning.

AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil.Today’s motor oils (especially synthetic oils) have a much more linear viscosity across the temperature spectrum. As a result, they are much less prone to being too thick in the extreme cold or thinning out in extreme heat. Therefore, a good 5W-40 will provide flawless protection all year-round.

That is why a 5W-40 can now safely replace 15W-40 for year-round use.

What Is The Difference Between AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty and Heavy-Duty Diesel Oils?

Signature Series Max-Duty is AMSOIL’s most sophisticated formula. It delivers their absolute best wear control.

In the Detroit Diesel DD13 Engine Scuffing Test, Signature Series beat the minimum standard by 600%. Heavy-Duty Series beat the standard by 400%.

Signature Series Max-Duty is overbuilt for extended oil change interval capability. Heavy-Duty Series should be changed at the interval suggested by the manufacturer or by the oil life monitor.

Heavy Duty Series has a lower price tag. It was brought to market for commercial fleets, the installer market and value-minded consumers.

Is 5W-40 Motor Oil Now Suggested For EcoDiesel Engines?

EcoDiesel engines are being switched from 5W-30 motor oil to 5W-40 and apparently there is a good mechanical reason for it.

There’s an online commotion brewing regarding a technical service bulletin (TSB) released by Fiat-Chrysler (FCA) on July 20, 2016. The bulletin pertains to an engine oil upgrade from 5W-30 to 5W-40 for the 2016 Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee models with the EcoDiesel engine. This bulletin directs Chrysler-Jeep dealers to drain the factory-fill 5W-30 motor oil and replace it with 5W-40 motor oil.

Addendum cards have also been shipped to dealers which are to be added to owner’s manuals. These cards recommend the use of synthetic 5W-40 engine oil that meets the FCA Material Standard MS-10902 and API CJ-4 specifications.

Some Chrysler dealers we spoke to seem to think that this recommendation applies only to 2016 EcoDiesel models. Based on the language in the bulletin, it’s easy to arrive at that conclusion. But there is more to this story.

Why Is 5W-40 Now Recommended For The EcoDiesel Engine?

It took some digging, but we think we may have found the answer. We spoke to several Dodge dealers and also FCA Customer Care. Few had even heard of the engine oil changeover or they simply read back the bulletin. But a service manager at a Salt Lake City Dodge dealership had heard all about the reason for this oil switch from an FCA warranty official. Apparently the 3.0L EcoDiesel engine is experiencing an unsettling number of main bearing failures. FCA is laying the blame on the thin viscosity of 5W-30 engine oil. They believe that the thicker viscosity of 5W-40 engine oil will cure this issue. This service manager suggested that all model years will have a 5W-40 recommendation and that 5W-30 engine oil will be obsolete for the EcoDiesel engine.

Will 2014 And 2015 EcoDiesel Engines Require 5W-40 Motor Oil?

This seems to be all but official, but you wouldn’t know it if you called your local Jeep or Ram dealer. The latest revisions of the 2014 and 2015 owner’s models now suggest “SAE 5W-40 Synthetic, API CJ-4”.
